Australia's Best Puppy Beds Reviewed

Before we give you the run down of what key factors make a great dog bed, we will first highlight what is available in the market for your new puppy. Let’s dive into the best puppy beds in Australia.

#1: Best Overall: The Barney Bed

Irish Terrier in a Barney Bed

What sets this product apart from the rest?

  • Hundreds of genuine 5-star reviews on Google
  • Three layer high-quality memory foam base & reinforced easy to clean material covers
  • Durable & designed to last a canine lifetime
  • 100% Australian owned and designed
  • Super fast free shipping

When we think of best dog beds on the market, we think stylish design, high-quality materials, and supreme comfort. We’re pleased to say that the Barney Bed comes out head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to those three key indicators.

The uber-cool design is enhanced by its extremely comfortable memory foam base. This makes it an ideal orthopedic choice too for heavier puppies with heavier joints. The bed is both soft and sturdy, making it much more durable in the long run. The chin-rest design is reinforced by the high-density nature of the foam, so this bed will never sag or lose its shape.

In terms of cleaning and maintenance, the tight-knit microfibre covers are simple to clean in the washing machine.

The Barney Bed comes in a range of sizes. The smallest size is 78 cm long and the largest XXL is 200 cm long. Therefore, a perfect choice for puppies of all sizes or if you want to invest in a bed that can last beyond puppyhood.

Unlike the second option, Rosewood, the Barney Bed offers more variety in terms of sizes, so if you like one that can be used even when your dog is over their puppy life stage, you can get the bigger size because this bed is designed to last a lifetime.

Another pro is the linen cover options. Barney has a range of colourful 100% linen covers to choose from if you would like to customise the style of the bed. These are machine washable too and owe their durability to a polyester reinforced lining. However be warned, these linen coverings are not as hardy as the microfibre covers on the actual Barney Bed, meaning it's possible your teething puppy will easily rip or scratch the cover.

Overall the Barney Bed is a far superior option than any other bed. It's built to last and will see your puppy post-puppyhood, you can always get your dream linen cover colour for your dog after the teething phase.

We cannot recommend the Barney Bed highly enough! It is comfortable, quick to clean, and has so many amazing reviews.

Our puppies love this bed, and we couldn't find a better brand than this for them on the Australian market. The superior comfort and durability of this bed make it a must-have for any puppy owner.

Plus, with all the features that we can get from this puppy bed, your puppies will soundly sleep while you enjoy the efficiency of maintaining their bed.

This Barney Bed is suitable for small dogs like a Chihuahua to extra large dogs like a Great Dane.

Rosewood 40 Winks Jumbo Cord Plush Dog Bed
  • Low price point
  • Machine-washable
  • Stylish design
  • Chew-resistant fleece

When it comes to cheap dog beds, the winner for us is the Rosewood 40 Winks Bed. This bed is surprisingly good quality for its low price point and packs a punch in terms of great features.

Starting with the tightly-woven fleece fabric, Rosewood claims this bed is completely chew-proof. That’s a huge bonus when it comes to shopping for your rambunctious pup! The tough fabric is also water-resistant so muddy, wet paws won’t cause this bed to fall apart.

This chew-proof feature of the fabric is an advantage when compared to the previous brand, the Barney Bed. Considering that puppies are teething, the tendency to chew anything is likely possible, and their beds are not an exception to this. So, this brand has provided a solution to this by creating a tightly-woven fabric that won't rip or scratch.

Onto the washability and luckily the Rosewood is machine washable. Given its lower cost, the interior mattress is not as durable as the Barney Bed would be. This could lead to the bed losing its shape over time. However, as it is so cheap, the bed is easy to replace.

We love the design of this bed too. The dusky grey cord look is stylish and modern, suiting every home. Its cocoon design is inviting and comfortable, leading to a restful night’s sleep for your pup.

This bed only comes in one size, however. It is 50 cm in length so most puppies of small and medium breeds will get on with it. Not ideal, however, for larger puppies who will outgrow this option quickly.

All in all, if the size is not too restrictive for your puppy’s expected growth over the coming months, the Rosewood 40 Winks is one of the best small dog beds in Australia.

We recommend this bed for those who have small breeds of puppies and especially for those breeds that love to chew, which proves its quality and durability.

Also, we like how this brand does not compromise the quality of their dog bed despite the low price, so your puppy can have a durable bed at an affordable price. We can definitely see that we are getting more than what we are paying for.

#3: Best Luxury Puppy Bed: Luxury Dog Bed by Ambient Lounge

Luxury Dog Bed by Ambient Lounge small
  • Removable faux-fur cover
  • 99% chew-proof
  • Water-resistant base
  • Machine-washable cover

To take things up a notch in the luxury department, we have the Ambient Lounge Luxury Dog Bed. This bed truly has it all. A unique combination of elevated comfort and indestructibility makes it a perfect choice for naughty, chewing puppies, despite its lofty price range.

Firstly, the chew-proof qualities are not to be sniffed at. The unchewable, interwoven nylon base is also waterproof, so it is versatile for indoor and outdoor use. The tiniest teeth with the strongest bite could not pierce this bed, so we believe Ambient Lounge when they say this model is 99% chew-resistant.

Like the previous brand, the Ambient Lounge is also chew-resistant. However, this brand is better in terms of its use both indoors and outdoors. If you and your puppy like to hang out outdoors, then this bed is perfect for you.

We love that this bed comes in a range of sizes from Small to XXL. Much like the Barney Bed, the Ambient Lounge is a great choice of bed that your puppy can grow with over time. For example, the medium size would be perfectly suitable for Newfoundland puppies or you could invest in the XXL size straight away and watch your puppy quickly take up more and more room on the giant plush mattress.

Speaking of the plush mattress, let’s talk about the comfort level of this bed. The rounded shape is great for dogs who love to curl up in a perfect circle as they sleep. The faux-fur cover is removable and super soft.

As for maintenance, the cover of the bed is machine-washable. The base is easily cleaned with soapy water.

Onto the cons and the clear drawback is the price range. It is a luxury bed so expect luxury prices. Another con is that this bed is quite heavy. The Barney Bed is a lighter alternative in this price category if portability is a factor for you.

Overall, we love the Ambient Lounge for a long-term investment option for your pampered pooch.

We recommend this one if you can afford it and want to spoil your puppy with a luxury bed. This is a great puppy bed with all of its excellent features that you and your dog can enjoy.

Also, it is one of the few puppy beds that has a faux-fur cover that puppies who like to cuddle will surely love because it gives them warmth and comfort with a waterproof base, making it one of the best puppy beds in the market that we can find.

This Luxury Dog Bed by Ambient Lounge bed is suitable for small dogs like a Chihuahua to large dogs like a Husky.

#4: Best Crate Mat: MIXJOY Dog Bed Crate Mat

MIXJOY Dog Bed Crate Mat
  • Good range of sizes
  • Low price point
  • Stylish
  • Easy to clean

Crate training is often a key part of housetraining your puppy. Though the jury is out in terms of whether you need a specific crate mat or just some soft blankets to line the crate, we’re going to recommend options for both methods.

Our pick for a great crate mat for your puppy is the MIXJOY. This cost-effective option is durable, comfy, and stylish. Everything you could want.

Compared to the third option, Ambient Lounge, MIXJOY comes at a lower price, and even if it is not water-resistant or has a chew-proof material, the quality of the material and the design can make this dog bed worth buying.

Starting with the material, the tight-stitching and tough fabric make it low on the perishability scale. The bed is soft and inviting to chew, but your pup is unlikely to tear through the cover.

The structure of the mat is sturdy, owing its hardiness to strong cotton padding. This means it is less likely to lose shape over time.

Any puppy bedding going in a crate needs to be extremely easy to clean. We’re pleased to say the MIXJOY also ticks that box. Simply machine wash to get the mat sparkling clean again.

This mat comes in three sizes from 76 cm to 106 cm in width. Many breeds will do well with this bed.

The low price point for the quality makes this crate mat a winner all-round for us. Your puppy will love it!

We love how this dog bed has a non-skid bottom surface so your puppy's bed stays in place, considering how active and playful puppies can be.

We like how reliable this brand is despite not having a warranty since the reviews definitely speak for their product's quality.

This MIXJOY Dog Bed Crate Mat bed is suitable for small dogs like a Chihuahua to large dogs like a Husky.

BLEVET Super Soft Coral Fleece Puppy Blanket
  • Durable
  • Machine-washable
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Low price point

If you are in the blanket and basket camp, the BLEVET is a prime choice for puppy bedding.

Comfort is king with its uber soft fleece material. It is a high-quality polyester that is snuggly for newborn puppies and older puppies alike. Thick but lightweight, this blanket is ideal for travelling with your dog too.

We chose this as our fifth option because, unlike MIXJOY, this is a puppy blanket that you can use to make your puppy comfortable whether you are in a car, on a sofa, or as soft bedding for your puppy's not-so-cosy bed.

Machine washable and durable, BLEVET boasts that this blanket can last your dog a long time. It retains its shape, avoids pilling and shedding despite multiple washes.

The BLEVET puppy blanket comes in three sizes ranging from 100 cm at its smallest and 200 cm at its largest. Therefore many puppy breeds will get on with this blanket and even grow with it. In terms of design, it comes in five different neutral colours. Our favourite is the green one!

A key feature is the low price point. Regardless of the size, this blanket will not break the bank by any means. This is handy as this blanket is not chew-proof. It can take a beating but strong puppy bites could potentially pierce the fleece fabric if left to their own devices. As it is so economical, though, these puppy blankets are incredibly easy to replace.

We like how versatile this blanket is and does not only offer snuggly bedding for our pets. This is specifically designed for puppies and considers their needs when a dog bed is not available. We recommend this if your puppy likes to keep itself warm or just wants something that it can lie on to have a good sleep.

This BLEVET Super Soft Coral Fleece Puppy Blanket is suitable for small dogs like a Chihuahua to extra large dogs like a Great Dane.

#6: Best Cave Bed For Puppies: Enerhu Pet Nest

Enerhu Pet Nest
  • Chew-proof
  • Low cost
  • Durable
  • Stylish design

Perhaps your little furbaby is a cave dweller! We don’t blame them. It’s nice to cuddle up in a little cocoon. Introducing the Enerhu Pet Nest.

This quirky little bed is tougher than it looks at first, boasting chew-proof capabilities due to its high-density, tight-stitched velvet fabric. This bed is lightweight and durable making it a great portable, long-lasting option for your puppy.

We made this our sixth option because out of all the puppy beds on this list, this brand has the only dog bed that is specifically designed for puppies who like to be wrapped in a warm fabric while they sleep.

We love the cute floppy ear design! The cave itself is soft and warm. Your puppy will feel incredibly cosy at night.

Another bonus is the relatively low price-point, so it is an ideal option for those of you on a budget.

The cons are the washability. Unfortunately, this model is hand wash only in order to retain its shape. This may be a bit of a pain, but it’s the price we pay for such a cool design!

This cave bed for puppies also only comes in small sizes. Therefore it is only really suitable for newborn puppies, small breeds, and toy dogs.

If the size is right, however, this cave bed could be ideal for your pup.

We like the adorable and unique design of this bed. We highly recommend this bed for puppies who prefer to be cuddled or kept warm at night. The design ensures that your puppies will stay in bed even if they move around a lot while sleeping.

#7: Best Raised Bed For Puppies: Snooza Dog Flea Free Bed

Snooza Flea Free Dog Bed
  • Steel frame
  • Strong woven, breathable fabric
  • Well priced
  • Flat packs for portability

Raised dog beds are fantastic inventions. A piece of woven, breathable fabric is stretched tightly over a lightweight metal frame to create an elevated sleeping platform. That platform allows your puppy to sleep off of the ground. Though these beds aren’t as inviting in terms of softness, they are surprisingly comfortable. Long-haired breeds and larger puppies will be fans of an elevated dog bed. In this category, we are recommending the Snooza Flea Free model.

Like the Enerhu Pet Nest, this brand has a unique design. However, it is better for those puppies who like to spend time outdoors and sleep on the ground. This bed protects them from the cold ground and even from possible insects and other unwanted things that they might accidentally sleep on.

Remember earlier choices featured soft textures which may be enticing for chewing puppies? Well this metal frame construction kind of kills the "fun things to chew" factor. The sleeping platform of the Snooza also provides a terrible chewing experience, leading your puppy to avoid trying. If they do try to destroy it, both the frame and fabric are durable enough to withstand the nibbles of tiny teeth. You’ll have nothing to worry about!

The Snooza is fantastic in terms of washability and maintenance too. A hose down and scrub with soapy water will have it clean in no time. It’s easy to assemble and reassemble whenever you need to, adding to its portability if that is important to you.

PRO TIP: If you want to keep your dog cooler, consider a cooling dog mat option.

This bed comes in a wide range of sizes at a mid-range price point, so most puppies will do well with the Snooza.

So yes, raised dog beds are a little different from the norm, but well worth trying if you want a truly indestructible puppy bed.

We like the practicality and durability of this dog bed. It can be used either indoors or outdoors and are strong enough not to be destroyed when our puppies will try to chew on it.

Also, the materials are very easy to clean, which is a plus if your puppy is very likely to get their beds dirty. It dries fast, and your puppy can use it again in no time.

This Snooza Dog Flea Free Bed is suitable for small dogs like a Chihuahua to medium dogs like a Blue Heeler.

How I Choose A Puppy Bed

Puppies can spend between 18 to 20 hours a day asleep, so it is worth considering these factors before you buy a bed for your pup (1).

Durability

We all know that puppies’ teeth, just as human babies do. The teething stage lasts around 6 months as they grow into their adult chompers. This inevitably leads to a lot of destroyed furnishings, clothes, and dog beds. In fact, your puppy will probably annihilate their bed first if given the chance. An almost indestructible dog bed is therefore incredibly important.

There are two factors to the chewability of a dog bed. The first is the quality of the build. Tight stitching, woven mesh sleeping platforms, and chew-proof nylon are hardier than, say, low-grade polyester. Quality of build and price is not always correlated, but usually, the hardier materials are found on more expensive beds.

The second factor is what we like to call the “fun-to-chew” factor. Gnawing on the steel feet of a raised dog bed is probably as fun as chomping on a telephone pole. How appealing does that sound? The same goes for your puppy when choosing a victim for their teething wrath. Teething is quite painful after all. They are literally shedding and growing new teeth - very unpleasant for them. So, puppies will gravitate to softer, foam-like materials to devour.

It’s worth noting that soft beds are not completely out of the question. In the review section of this article, you have seen plenty of soft small dog beds that would be suitable for your puppy.

Ease of cleaning

Puppies make a mess. That’s a given. From accidents during housetraining to muddy paws, their bedding will likely get dirty quite quickly. Therefore, you need to choose a puppy bed that is easy and quick to clean. Machine washable dog beds are preferable as they require minimal fuss, but sometimes handwashing maintains the integrity of the bed for longer. It just depends on the materials and their ability to withstand the wash cycle. This comes back to the perishability of the bed. The ideal bed can be easily washed and is strong enough to endure frequent washing throughout the weeks and months.

Comfort

We all appreciate a soft place to lay our heads. Your puppy wants to feel comfortable when they sleep too. They want to feel warm, supported, safe and cosy. It is advisable to choose a bed that provides good cushioning to your puppy’s growing body.

Temperature control is a key factor here too. If you have a long-haired dog breed, they may find insulated fleecing or heated dog beds a bit too stifling. Elevated dog beds or versatile convertible dog beds are the better way to go, as they can provide ventilation for your pup as they sleep. Contrast this with hairless breeds who would perhaps prefer cave beds or luxury dog beds with plush lining for the ultimate snuggly experience as they rest.

Cost

There is a bit of a debate in the dog-owning community as to whether puppies even need beds, which we will discuss in more detail at the end of the article (2). The case for going without a bed altogether and just providing blankets is largely to do with cost.

What is the point in buying a bed that your puppy will grow out of or destroy?

PRO TIP: We find that the comfort and support given by puppy beds lead to healthier, stronger development in these critical early stages of a puppy’s life.

That said, it makes complete sense to attempt to keep costs down where you can. There are some great options to provide comfort to your dog without breaking the bank. In the interest of impartiality, we have a recommendation for the best puppy blanket as well.

Size

Though it is unlikely that you’ll need an XXL dog bed for your puppy, size is a key factor. We often assume that small dog beds are always the best option, but this completely depends on your puppy’s breed. A Newfoundland pup can reportedly grow five times faster than regular dog breeds, so they’ll grow out of their beds extremely quickly (3).

Related: How To Choose The Right Size Dog Bed

On the other hand, Miniature Dachshunds are unlikely to grow too much larger than their puppy form. With this in mind, choose a bed that will last your puppy at least 6 months with their breed’s rate of growth. If they are a mixed breed or rescue, you can guesstimate their eventual size by their current weight and the size of their paws. Yes - big paws do matter!

My Final Say

We hope this guide will help you decide which dog bed to get for your beloved canine companion. Considering the pros and cons, each dog bed has its own unique features depending on your preferences and your puppy's needs.

Overall, our top choice is the Barney Bed through and through. With crowning comfort, high-quality build, and stellar reviews, it’s a tough one to beat! If the Barney Bed is a little out of your price range, we recommend the Rosewood 40 Winks bed, which is a wonderful, economical option for puppies.

FAQ

Where should a puppy sleep?

Or in other words, do puppies even need beds? We touched on this a few times throughout the article as many owners think it could be a waste of money.

“Beds offer your pup a sense of security and a place of her own - a place to get away when she is tired or just needs quiet time by herself. Chances are, it will become her favorite spot in your home.” - Pet Coach (4).

Add to that the support that small dog beds provide, and we think a puppy bed is well worth the investment.

Is it bad for your puppy to sleep in your bed?

This is a very common question! According to a study conducted in 2017, there is actually historical precedence for humans “co-sleeping” with animals (5). So it’s not just the modern millennial age that encouraged this wave of bed-dwelling dogs.

Honestly, it is entirely up to you. You can allow your puppy to sleep in a bed with you if you want to. It is worth being aware of the common disadvantages:

  • Your puppy will want to sleep in bed with you as they grow older too
  • Co-sleeping can amplify allergy issues
  • Co-sleeping can cause poor sleep for both you and the dog
  • For puppies, there is an added risk of accidents if they are not housetrained

Generally, if you allow your puppy to sleep with you, you should still have a bed specifically for them. It’s important they also have their own space to rest throughout the day and at night if they so choose.

How can you get your puppy to sleep through the night?

Crate training is typically the best way to get your dog to sleep through the night. You need to make the environment as inviting and cosy as possible for them. It’s also good practice to sleep in close proximity to your puppy as they are crate training, so they feel the security of you being near them (6).

It’s worth noting that sometimes sleeping straight through the night is just not possible, particularly if they are quite young. They will likely wake you to let you know they need to pee, which is a good thing. As your puppy ages and their bladder control is better, they will have a higher percentage of sound sleepy nights.

How do you make a puppy crate comfortable?

You can make a puppy crate comfortable in several ways. We recommend using crate mats like the MIXJOY or blankets like the BLEVET, to make the crate cosy. It is also good practice to insert an old t-shirt of yours. Your smell is reassuring to them. You can also insert a toy that came from the breeder or rescue center to make them feel at home.
