Andis AGC Brushless 2-Speed Clipper

There is a reason why many top groomers use the Andis AGC Brushless 2-Speed Clipper. This clipper can motor through any coat type over and over again and not miss a beat. Thanks to its innovative brushless rotary motor technology, it lasts 10-12 times longer than most regular clippers so you can be confident it’s not going to break on you.

Even with its powerful motor, it is the quietest and lightest professional clipper in the Andis range. This combined with the CeramicEdge technology bladed, which run 75% cooler, help keep your pup comfortable in what can often be a stressful time.

As a side note, our team of experts highly recommend getting an attachment comb set or another blade length with this clipper to give you more grooming versatility. While these clippers are more affordable than others on this list, they do not include a comb set, which may restrict the type of grooming your pet needs.

Thanks to a powerful battery and charger, this clipper can get fully charged in just 45 minutes, and then you have an hour and a half of cordless operation. There is a cute indicator on the back that changes colours just like a traffic light, telling you how much battery power you have left. Despite being powerful, this is also one of the lightest Wahl pet clippers available. It weighs less than 300 grams. You barely feel it in your hand.

Finally, this model comes with a removable scissor grip that you can put your finger through. This makes your grip on the clipper more secure and your moves more precise, thus making the overall result perfect. This grooming kit from HOLDOG is perfect for those who want to try grooming their pet’s coat for the first time. These clippers are so easy and intuitive to use that you should be able to get the hang of it quickly.

This means you can start slowly to get both and you and your dog used to the operation of the clippers. Like our number three pick, there is also a small LCD screen on the clipper that tells you what speed you are working at and how much battery power is left.

Speaking of battery power, this clipper is cordless. With a single charge it can withstand up to 3 hours of continuous operation which is more than you will ever need. #5: Best Dog Clippers on a Budget: Otstar Rechargeable Cordless Pet Hair Clippers

Otstar Rechargeable Cordless Pet Hair Clippers
  • The spare battery doubles the working time
  • Good value for money
  • Lightweight
  • Great performance

These clippers from Otstar have a sleek design that looks like it costs a pretty penny - yet it’s quite affordable and high-quality. Along with the clipper, you get a power adapter, a cleaning brush, four comb attachments and a spare battery in the set.

An ergonomic anti-slip handle ensures a safe grip while trimming your pooch. The clippers weigh only 650 grams - it’s light as a feather, so you won’t tire your hands during a long styling session.

An hour and a half of charging time gives you around 90 minutes of clipper use. However, you get a spare lithium-ion battery in the set, and 180 minutes is plenty of time to trim even the furriest of dogs, as I soon learned when testing them out with my toy poodle. There’s a charging indicator light that lets you know when your battery is full and ready for use.

These clippers have a stainless steel fixed blade and a ceramic moving blade, which go through the thick hair with ease. You can choose from 5 levels of blade length, from 0.8mm to 2mm. Attachment combs that come with this set are standard sized, ranging from 3mm to 12mm, and they allow you to clip the hair of various lengths.

Finally, we like the fact that the motor on these clippers is very quiet, similar to the first two clippers we mention on this list. It generates a slight vibration and it doesn’t go over 50 dB. So you don’t have to worry about your pet being scared of a grooming session anymore!

#6: Best Dog Clippers for Thick Coats: Andis Pro-Animal EBC Clipper

Andis Pro-Animal EBC Clipper
  • Powerful heavy duty clipper
  • Extremely quiet
  • Drop proof casing
  • Advanced blade cutting technology

If your dog has a thick coat you need a clipper that is up for the job. Look no further than the Andis Pro Animal EBC. This heavy duty clipper was designed to endure the toughest of coats.

With a powerful rotary motor and the best blade technology it makes light work of any thick, woolly, double, long or wire coated breeds.

Like the afforementioned option, this clipper is whisper quiet yet has a durable housing to withstand any kicks or knocks off the table. Andis has been making clippers for over 100 years and is one of the most trusted brands in the space, so you can be sure confident you’ve made a good choice.

The kit includes 4 different attachment combs for different cutting lengths as well as some blade oil to keep the clipper performing at its best.

The only downside to this clipper is that it is corded, unlike most of the other clippers on this list. However the cord is extra long, so I didn’t find it too restrictive.

#7: Best Waterproof Dog Clippers: Iweel Waterproof Dog Hair Clipper

Iweel Waterproof Dog Hair Clipper
  • Waterproof body for easy cleaning
  • Includes 6 guide combs
  • Can be used while charging
  • Charged with a simple USB cable

These clippers from Iweel are something else compared to all the others on our list. First of all, this model is waterproof which makes it possible to use it immediately after a bath (though you should be careful with that if you’ve never tried before).

It is also much easier to clean the whole clipper as you can simply rinse it with water. Anyone who has tried to clean clippers before know how lengthy of a process it can be. But Iweel's waterproof clippers make this task seamless.

The second area that stands out about these clippers is its two speed precision cut, making it great for short and long haired breeds.

The blades on both heads are ceramic, while the comb part is stainless steel. Both materials are durable and don’t mind the contact with water. Our expert team also note that ceramic blades stay sharp longer than metal ones.

Finally, these clippers are charged using a standard USB cable. That’s a really convenient solution, since you can charge the clipper almost anywhere.

The only downside is that the charging is a bit slow. Iweel counteracts that by making the clipper operational while charging. (Just make sure to keep it out of water in that case!)

  • Waterproof body for easy cleaning
  • Not the best choice for large and thick-haired dogs

#8: Best Pocket-Sized Dog Trimmer: Wahl Clipper Pocket Pro

Wahl Clipper Pocket Pro
  • Small and lightweight
  • Not too loud
  • Battery-powered

This pocket trimmer from Wahl is so small that it can easily fit into the palm of your hand. You can even conceal it in your hand, which is an easy way to trick a dog that gets scared of clippers.

While the trimmer is miniscule, our team found that the blade is wider than we expected. It’s big enough to easily do quick touch ups around the ears, paws, and pretty much anything if your dog is small. I did just that with my dog, and he co-operated despite not always being a grooming fan.

Scaredy Cut Silent Pet Grooming Kit For Cats & Dogs
  • Good solution for anxious dogs
  • Easy to use
  • Comfortable

Some dogs just can’t get used to the sound of the clippers! After all, to them the sound appears much louder than to us thanks to their sensitive sense of hearing. Well, with our next pick, you can avoid torturing your beloved pet. Especially if your dog is small, grooming is entirely doable without the electric clipper with just a bit of patience.

This kit from Scaredy Cut features a pair of scissors to which you attach guiding combs (just like those from electric clippers) that allow you to cut to uniform length. You’ll get 6 different combs in this pack so you can always choose just the length you want. Keep in mind that, unlike others on this list, this option is best for long-haired dog breeds.

The scissors are designed to be comfortable for you too. There is a left-handed and a right-handed version and they include a selection of inserts for your fingers.

Choose gel inserts if you prefer the soft touch, smooth inserts for a bit more freedom, or use the scissors without inserts if you prefer a loose grip. The system is really easy to use - even for beginners like us - and a grooming guide is included for guidance. What more could you ever need?

What I Look For In A Dog Clipper

Do all dogs need their coats trimmed?

Definitely not! But some of them can actually benefit from it.

“Over the centuries, humans have bred some pets -- specifically dogs -- to have thicker coats than others, and these breeds can sometimes use a little help cooling off during summer's heat, says Jean Sonnenfield, DVM, for Fetch

Some breeds, like Poodles or Bichons, usually need regular grooming and not just to look pretty! Because of the texture of their fur, it’s extremely difficult to keep it from matting without trimming it down from time to time (2). As a toy poodle parent, I know from experience that my little guy's fur need plenty of routine maintenance! The good news is you can easily learn how to do it at home with a good dog grooming kit.

But how do you choose the right dog clippers? Here are some things to consider:

Blades: Stainless Steel or Ceramic?

Dog clippers look like clippers for human hair. As you can imagine, they are usually made of stainless steel. They need to be stainless as this is the only metal that will not rust in contact with moisture and oils from the doggo-s coat.

While stainless steel blades are great and strong, they have some downsides. Firstly, they tend to heat up quickly, so you’ll need to take breaks often or use a blade cooler (fancy!) They also tend to lose their sharpness faster than ceramic blades.

Ceramic blades, on the other hand, tend to stay cooler than stainless steel blades since they are not conductive to heat. They also tend to stay sharp for longer periods of time. The downsides are they aren't easy to find and tend to be more expensive than stainless steel.

Motor Speed

The unit of measurement of motor speed in clippers is Strokes Per Minute (SPM). Stronger clipper motors will make the clipper move more quickly through the dog's coat. The strongest of them will have no problem dealing even with dense, matted fur. However, clippers that work faster also get warm faster. So if your dog doesn’t have an incredibly thick and messy coat this might not be a feature you need.

Some manufacturers make models with variable speeds. You can choose how fast you want your clipper to operate. If you are just trying out dog grooming, this might be a good option. It will help you learn what works for your dog’s coat.

Battery Power

Most clippers made these days are made for cordless operation. When buying a battery-powered clipper, it’s important to check how long the operation time is, and how long it takes to recharge. Sometimes the charging times can be lengthy which can be really annoying if you forget to charge the clipper ahead of time.

One thing to keep in mind is that batteries tend to get weaker over time. Clippers that plug directly into the power outlet are actually more reliable. If you don’t mind dealing with the cord, you might also want to consider wired clippers instead.

My Final Verdict On Dog Clippers

When it comes to dog grooming equipment, clippers are definitely the hardest piece to shop for. If you are looking for truly professional clippers that are a joy to use, our team believes that the Fur King Cordless Dog Hair Clippers is definitely the best option.

However, it also comes at quite a high price. If you are just a beginner, it might be too much to spend. In that case, we suggest the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Dog Clippers for a well-rounded, beginner-friendly option.

FAQ

Do all dogs need haircuts?

No, definitely not. In fact, most breeds won’t ever need a cut, providing that you do brush them on a regular basis. Short-haired and double-coated breeds should never be shaved, no matter what. However, many dogs will benefit from a gentle cut.

What’s the difference between clippers for dogs and hair clippers for people?

If you are wondering whether you can cut your dog’s coat with clippers designed for humans, we advise against it. A dog’s skin is more sensitive than ours, but their coats are often thicker, and clippers for dogs are designed to reflect that.

How often should I use clippers on my dog?

This totally depends on the dog in question. Long-haired breeds typically need grooming more often. In general, a dog will need a cut once every month at worst, but many can go as long as 12 weeks between trimmings.

How to clean and maintain dog clippers?

To keep the clippers functioning and prolong the life-span of the blade, it’s important to clean it after every grooming session. You will usually get a cleaning brush when you buy the clippers, so use that to get all of the hair out once you are done. Blade oil should also be applied from time to time.
