"Less is best when it comes to dog harness. The slim profile of our number one pick, the Fur King Signature Quick Fit Harness, provides unmatched comfort. During our tests it caused the least irritation, with the padding located in strategic spots. The personalisation options were the cherry on top."

This Fur King quick-fit harness has a slim profile, but there is still enough space for a personalised patch with your dog’s name. You can add an existing patch or order one with the harness.

We chose this brand as our first option because of how much you can personalise it. Starting from the Fur King logo patches, where you can upgrade to add your pooch's name and a custom message that you can sew on your dog's special harness.

As for the harness itself, it’s a combination of nylon webbing straps with padding in strategic places to make it comfy. You can fit the harness within seconds by simply pulling it over your dog’s head and snapping a single quick-release buckle into place. There are metal rings for attaching the lead both on the front and back, so you can choose what works the best for you and your pooch.

In particular, I also liked how the harness has metal O-rings in both the front and the top, so I was able to choose where to attach the leash for my dog's comfort.

Like with our number five choice below, everyone on our team of independent experts also appreciated the reflective nylon webbing that makes it ideal for nighttime use, allowing both you and your dog easier to spot in the dark.

OneTigris Tactical Service Dog Vest

What sets this product apart from the rest?

  • Five sizes and six colours are available
  • Very customizable
  • Comes with back, side and front loop panels for patches
  • Features both chest and back D-rings
  • MOLLE webbing for attaching pouches

This harness by OneTigris has everything you need in such a product, including the design and quality. When you put all of these factors together, it’s clear why this harness is at the top of our list.

Unlike our number-one harness by Fur King, this one comes with a lot of options like hoop and loop panels where you can attach your patches. It gives you more freedom to personalise your dog's harness.

The harness is made of 1000D nylon, which is one of the most durable options out there. This material is commonly used for military and outdoor gear, so you can imagine how rugged it must be. This type of nylon is coated with polyurethane, which also makes it waterproof. To make wearing it more comfortable, the harness features soft mesh padding all over the inner side.

But what makes this harness number one on this list is the fact that it’s highly customizable. On both sides of the harness, it features large loop strips on which you can attach one or more dog patches. There’s also a smaller loop panel on the neck strap, right above the D-ring. And if that’s not enough, you also have the long panel underneath the MOLLE webbing where you can also add a personalized patch to express your dog’s personality.

This harness comes in different military shades, such as brown, green and grey. As for the sizes, you can choose between five options, ranging from XS to XL. If your Fido is a size in between, you can always go with the larger one and adjust the straps to a perfect fit.

What our panel of independent experts like best is how this harness gives our dog a snug and comfortable fit. Also, to prevent the harness from twisting or moving under large or unbalanced loads, the wide neck and chest straps have full adjustability.

We can use this harness and vest set for everyday walks and outdoor adventures with all its wonderful features.

EXCELLENT ELITE SPANKER Tactical Dog Harness Vest
  • Very sturdy and water-resistant nylon material
  • Comes in three sizes and four colours
  • Soft-padded control handle for problematic situations
  • Rather affordable

With personalised dog harnesses, you don’t want to go overboard with patterns and colours. If you’re already adding custom patches, the actual harness can have a minimalistic design, like this one by Excellent Elite Spanker.

But just to be clear, this simple-looking harness is anything but basic. Starting with the material, it’s made of 1050D nylon, the fabric used for luggage, police belts and even motorcycle jackets and chaps. It’s abrasion and tear-resistant, as well as water-repelling, so you know it can last a pretty long time.

What sets this harness apart from the first and second options on this list is the handle on the back. It makes it easy to lift our dog in and out of the car and gives added control when we are out on walks or even when training our dog.

The harness features two large loop panels that allow you to attach quite large doggy patches. There’s also a small front panel where you can add your pooch’s ID. So even though this harness comes in simple, earthy colours, you can make it stand out with patches personalized for your furry friend.

Unlike our last choice with several sizes and our next one with only two, this harness has only three sizes to choose from S, M and L. As long as your dog is between 12 and 55 kilograms, the harness should fit just right. Thanks to easy-adjusting straps and quick-release buckles, you can adjust the harness to sit tight around your dog’s body.

The only issue our team of experts had with this vest when testing it out is the fact that it comes with plastic D-rings, both on the front and the back. While extremely sturdy, the plastic ring can break from too much pressure. If your dog is not a puller, this isn’t something you should concern yourself about. But with large, strong dogs that aren’t always obedient (like mine!), this might eventually become an issue.

We love the quality of this harness. The materials are top-notch, and the Coyote Brown colour is sleek and stylish, which is our personal favourite. It's truly a top-of-the-line product that will make walks and outdoor adventures much more enjoyable for you and your furry friend.

We appreciate the adjustable straps, which ensure a perfect fit, and the no-pull design, which is a game-changer. My furry friend is a strong puller, but with this harness, I'm able to take control without our dog feeling uncomfortable.

  • Very sturdy and water-resistant nylon material
  • Plastic D-rings will wear out in time
  • Comes in three sizes and four colours
  • Soft-padded control handle for problematic situations

#4: Best For Long Trips: Hanshengday Tactical Dog Vest

Hanshengday Tactical Dog Vest
  • Comes with two detachable bags
  • Heavy-duty but breathable material
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Water-resistant coating makes it suitable for different weather conditions

Hiking or camping with your furry best friend can be quite an enjoyable experience. However, it also means carrying more gear with you. Unless your customised dogs harness has storage capabilities. Which is exactly what this model by Hanshengday offers.

This dog harness offers quite a bit of personalization. The loop panels practically cover the entire sides of the harness, so there’s plenty of room to attach patches and dog bags. This product comes with two reflective “service dog” stickers, as well as two detachable bags. The first one features a drawstring and is for holding bottles, while the second one is suitable for treats, toys or doggy bags.

While there are certainly other popular brands out there, like the previous option in spot three, Excellent Elite Spanker, the Hanshengday vest boasts unique benefits that make it one of our top contenders. Crafted with top-quality materials, this harness can handle even the most wear and tear, and its comfortable fit ensures that our dog won't be left with any skin irritation or rubbing.

The material used for this harness is 1000D nylon, which is soft and breathable, yet very rugged. On top of that, it’s water-resistant, so your dog can wear it in different weather conditions without getting soaked.

Unlike the other choices on this list, there are only two sizes to choose from, for dogs that are medium to large. However, the straps are highly adjustable and you can add or deduct a few centimetres to make the harness fit your dog better. Thanks to the soft mesh padding, a tight-fitting strap is comfortable and won’t cut into your pooch’s armpit.

We like how this harness is designed with a heavy-duty but breathable material. If you're ready to give your pup a harness that can keep up with their enthusiasm, we highly recommend giving the Hanshengday Tactical Dog Vest a try. With this harness, you can rest assured that your four-legged friend will be comfortable, secure, and ready for any adventure that comes their way.

Plus, our panel of experts appreciated its multiple attachment points for leashes and other accessories. The Hanshengday vest is perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities, from hiking to training and beyond.

#5: Best No-Pull Harness: Bolux Dog Harness

Bolux Dog Harness
  • Lots of colours and patterns to choose from
  • A thick, padded chest strap prevents pulling
  • Extremely sturdy stainless steel D-ring
  • Comes in six sizes

If your pooch is the one walking you, and not the other way around, then what you need is a good no-pull harness. And this model by Bolux is one of the best personalised no pull dog harness Australia has to offer.

Unlike the Hanshengday vest that can feel restrictive and uncomfortable, the Bolux dog harness is designed to provide superior comfort and quality. From its breathable mesh fabric to its sturdy construction, every detail has been carefully considered to ensure that your dog feels comfortable and secure while wearing it.

First, let’s talk colours. From turquoise and purple to army yellow and green, there are tons of options to choose from. And even if you find one-colour harnesses boring, there are patterns to choose from, including navy and Santa Claus. The harness features a loop panel on each side, which is decently sized to be visible from afar.

Speaking of visibility, the chest strap has reflective stitching throughout, like our number one choice. This makes your pooch noticeable at night and during fog, so you’re safer when going for a late walk. The strap is thick enough to evenly distribute pressure and prevent your pooch from walking. And since it’s well-padded, it won’t cut into your dog’s skin.

On the back, the harness features a large D-ring for attaching a leash. It’s made of stainless steel, so you know it can withstand quite a bit of pulling without breaking. There’s also a padded handle right above the D-ring that allows you to control your canine friend in case of unexpected situations.

I especially love how this harness comes in six sizes, ranging from XS to XXL. If your dog’s weight is roughly between 2 to 55 kilograms, one of these sizes should be a fit. Of course, there’s always a bit of room for adjustments, as you can fine-tune the straps according to your pooch’s body shape.

One of the key features of the Bolux dog harness that we love is its padded chest and belly straps, which are designed to distribute pressure evenly across your dog's body. This minimises the risk of discomfort or injury, making it an ideal choice for our dogs.

Also, our panel of pros appreciated that this harness is fully adjustable, ensuring that it fits your dog perfectly. This is particularly important for dogs that are still growing or that have unique body shapes.

Cons

  • Lots of colours and patterns to choose from
  • Not suitable for very large dogs
  • A thick, padded chest strap prevents pulling
  • Extremely sturdy stainless steel D-ring

EZYDOG Harness Corduroy Express
  • Minimalistic design
  • EVA foam padding forms to the shape of your dog
  • Reflective stitching for added visibility
  • Good selection of available sizes

A harness can be quite a fashion statement. And who says that pooches don’t like looking good? This personalised dog harness by EzyDog will surely get a few heads turning.

While the design of this harness is minimalistic, similar to our number three choice, what grabs attention is the details. First, it’s made of corduroy. If you own a pair of pants made from the same material, then you surely know how comfortable your dog would feel wearing this. At the same time, the material is very strong and durable.

With its minimalistic yet sleek design, this harness offers a plethora of convenient features that make it better than its competitor, the Bolux dog harness. This is equipped with contouring EVA pads that provide optimal comfort and support for your furry friend.

This harness features only two straps: one that goes over the chest, and the other that goes around the dog’s body. The contoured EVA foam padding on the inner sides forms to the shape of your pooch over time. This makes wearing a harness quite enjoyable, without the material cutting into the dog’s skin.

The harness comes with two removable side patches, so you can put your own instead. On the right side, it also features an accessory ring where you can attach whatever you want, be it a dog’s ID or a poop bag holder. We also like the reflective stitching on the chest strap, like our number one and number five choices, which makes your dog more visible in low lighting.

There are several size options to choose from, ranging from XS to XL. And compared to many such products, this harness is designed to fit dogs of different sizes. While the XS is suitable for small dogs like Pekingese, the XL is large enough to fit a Bernese.

This brand is one of our recommended harnesses, especially since it works great for our large and powerful dogs. It allows us to restrain them when necessary without impeding their freedom of movement.

Also, our team of independent experts like how the harness features reflective stitching, enhancing visibility and ensuring our pet's safety, especially during low-light conditions.

  • Minimalistic design
  • Not suitable for wet weather
  • EVA foam padding forms to the shape of your dog
  • Reflective stitching for added visibility

Rabbitgoo Tactical Dog Harness Vest
  • Soft padding on pressure load points for comfort
  • Three sizes to choose from
  • A rather affordable price
  • Two leash attachment points

We can all agree that some dog products can cost an arm and a leg, especially for very large pooches. But it's not true that you can’t find an affordable yet customizable dog harness and this model by Rabbitgoo is proof of that.

While it comes with a low price tag, this harness is exceptionally well made. Like our third choice, the material of this harness is military-grade 1050D nylon, the same one that’s used for making chainsaw chaps and flak jackets. On top of that, it features cross-stitching for additional durability. For that reason, this harness is great for working dogs.

Compared to the sixth option, this is a military-standard harness with a two-sided MOLLE attachment that lets you attach bags, water bottles, and other dog tactical gear. There are a number of hook-and-loop panels, so you can add patches and badges that show off your dog's unique personality.

Underneath the sturdy material, the harness features soft padding on every pressure load point, so that it stays gentle on your dog’s skin. The inner layer is also covered in mesh, which our panel of independent experts especially appreciated since it provides breathability underneath all that fabric.

As for the customization, this harness has tons of space for adding patches. Two large loop panels on the side, as well as a small one on the front, allow you to fully showcase your canine companion’s personality.

What we also love about this harness are the buckles. Unlike most models on the market nowadays, this one features heavy-duty metal buckles that can withstand great pulling force. The harness features two leash attachment points, both also made of metal. One is located at the front for no-pulling, while the one on the back is suitable for casual walks.

We personally recommend this brand because it is suitable for a variety of purposes, including self-service, law enforcement, hunting, and recreational activities.

Also, we appreciate that this convenient dog harness features four quick-release buckles, making it simple to put on and take off.

  • Soft padding on pressure load points for comfort
  • Not fitting for very small dogs

What I Look For In A Personalised Dog Harness

You can find tons of customised dog harness models on the market, but most of them are no more than “okay” in terms of quality. There are a few things to consider when trying to find the perfect harness for your dog. This is what our team of independent experts recommend you keep an eye out for:

Durable Materials

If you’re going to spend time and money on personalising your dog’s harness, you surely want it to last a long time, right? A high-quality harness should last your pooch for a good couple of years at least.

Dogs being dogs, they will get wet and dirty. That’s why we want a harness that can withstand these conditions without getting damaged easily along the way.

For that reason, materials like nylon and polyester are among the best options. Not only are they durable, but these fabrics can also be water and UV-resistant, making them capable of standing up to daily wear and tear.

Leather is another great option, as it’s natural as well as flexible yet extremely strong. Unfortunately, it’s not that common since it’s very expensive.

Finally, it’s important to pay attention to the details. Parts like buckles and leash attachments are often the ones brands try to cut the cost on. More often than not, these parts are made of thin, flimsy materials that can break when a bit more pressure is applied.

Available Sizes

Keep in mind that a harness should always fit your dog’s body perfectly. As our experts want to remind you, if it’s too tight or too loose, it can do more damage than good. At the very least, a harness should give your pooch the freedom of movement.

“Pay close attention to the dog being able to do shoulder extension (front leg reaching forward) and shoulder abduction (front leg out to the side) without the harness impeding movement,” Lori Stevens, professional dog trainer at Tellington TTouch.

Unfortunately, many brands make their products in standard sizes, from S to L. Therefore, most models are designed for dogs that range in size from a Jack Russell Terrier to a Golden Retriever. In case your dog falls somewhere in between, there’s a pretty good chance you can find a suitable model. But for those that have very small or very large pooches, the struggle is real.

Regular vs No Pull

As you probably know, there are two types of harnesses: regular and no pull. The latter is designed to discourage pulling behaviour and make walking more enjoyable for both of you. Which one of these you need depends solely on how well-behaved and obedient your canine companion is during the daily walk.

No pull harnesses usually have a thick strap across the dog’s chest, which evenly distributes pressure, making your pooch more comfortable and less likely to pull. Furthermore, these harnesses feature a leash attachment at the chest strap, so whenever your furry friend tries pulling, the leash will direct the dog back toward you (3).

How To Measure Your Dog For A Harness

When shopping online, taking proper measurements is necessary for finding the right size. Pretty much every brand will give you the size chart, and the only thing you need to do is compare those numbers with the ones you measured.

Luckily, that’s no difficult task. According to our team of experts, the three measurements you need to take are: topline, chest and neck girth (1).

The topline is your dog’s back. To measure it, have your pooch stand and measure the length from the neck (right where the collar usually sits) up to the base of the tail.

Chest girth is the measurement of the dog’s widest part of the chest. In most cases, it’s right behind your pooch’s front legs. In this case, you want to leave enough room so that the straps don’t cut into your dog’s chest. So when measuring, place two fingers between the tape and your Fido.

Neck girth is the part where the collar is usually positioned. You want to add a “two finger” rule in this case as well.

If your pooch is between two sizes, always go for the larger one. With harnesses, the straps usually allow you to adjust a few centimetres up and down for a better fit.

The Verdict

There are quite a lot of options to choose from, so picking the best product is not an easy task. Still, our team of independent experts all agreed that the Fur King Signature Quick Fit Harness checks all the boxes when it comes to personalised dog harnesses. It’s rugged and waterproof, comes in different sizes and offers tons of room for patches and badges. We're confident that your pet will love the comfort and support provided by this exceptional harness.

But if your budget is tight, the Excellent Elite Spanker Tactical Dog Harness Vest may be a better option for you. It’s a simple but high-quality product that your dog will wear for a long time.

FAQ

What problems can an ill-fitting harness cause?

A harness that doesn’t fit well can do more harm than good, both physically and behaviorally. Whether too tight or too loose, a harness will rub onto the dog’s fur and skin, causing blisters. And since it’s uncomfortable, your dog will hate wearing it, which can also cause them to throw tantrums.

Can flat-faced breeds wear harnesses?

Contrary to popular belief, a harness is a better option for flat-faced dogs compared to a collar. Because these dogs have short muzzles and small nostrils, they have a harder time breathing than other breeds. A collar pressuring their neck would only make it worse. A harness, on the other hand, allows them to breathe without airflow restriction, even if they’re pulling.

When can a puppy start wearing a harness?

You should first introduce your puppy to a harness when they’re at least 8 weeks old. At this point, they’re starting to go out for walks, and a harness gives you more control and poses less risk of injury.
