Nature’s Miracle Dog Stain And Odour Remover

What sets this product apart from the rest?

  • One of the most popular enzymatic cleaners ever
  • Tried and true formula
  • Works on new and old stains alike
  • Convenient packaging
  • Light citrus smell

The name of this enzyme cleaner is accurate; it makes miracles happen. Within minutes, it did a fantastic job at making my dog's stains and odour disappear from my hard floors. It also works on furniture and most types of fabric (our team even tested it on some pee-stained carpet, to great success).

Nature’s Miracle is a brand that has been around for over 40 years, so they must be doing something right. Over the years, they developed a whole line of products specialized in cleaning pet messes and a faithful following among pet parents.

This specific enzyme cleaner is their classic product, so it’s the most versatile option. It works on any organic stain, no matter how deeply set in. It’s made to tackle dog pee, but it will also work on drool, vomit and other organic stains which have a persistent smell.

While it doesn't work on certain materials, such as untreated wood or leather, check out our number three choice if you need a product that does.

#2: Heavy Duty Option: Simple Solution Urine Destroyer

Simple Solution Urine Destroyer
  • Safe for use on colourfast carpets
  • Discourages future markings
  • Very affordable

This Simple Solution product is called Urine Destroyer, and the name is super appropriate. The formula is strong enough to remove the toughest stains and permanently eliminate the odour.

This product uses strong additives, like anionic surfactants and denatured ethanol, to destroy the tough stains and odours. However, these ingredients are toxic to dogs if ingested, so ensure your pooch is not in the room when cleaning. Once the area is dry and vacuumed, your canine companion can safely enter.

Even though it’s strong, we learnt during our testing phase that Urine Destroyer is not too harsh for use on upholstery and carpets. In fact, it’s certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute as safe for use on colourfast carpets, meaning you don’t have to worry about damage. It’s also suitable for bedding, fabric toys and clothing.

However, you should avoid using the cleaner on delicate fabrics like wool, velvet and leather, as it can eat through the material.

The product comes in a 1-litre bottle. That amount should last you what feels like a lifetime. However, the cap could be more practical, as it can dispense more than you need. A spray bottle, like with our number one and number three choices, is better.

Pros

Cons

  • Safe for use on colourfast carpets
  • Keep pets away until the product dries
  • Discourages future markings
  • Cap dispenses a lot of product
  • Very affordable

#3: Most Eco Friendly: Bio Dog Active Stain & Odor Remover

Bio Dog Active Stain & Odor Remover
  • Works on old stains
  • Suitable for any surface
  • Comes in two sizes
  • Has an ivory soap smell that dissipates quickly

The brand Simple Green specializes in cleaning products, and they designed their Bio Dog line to deal with pet stains exclusively. All the ingredients are safe for animals but strong enough to deal with the mess our pooches leave behind.

What our team of independent experts loved most about this product is that it works on virtually anything. Whether it’s carpet, upholstery, wood, stone or even cement, you can get rid of the toughest stains, which sets it apart from our number one choice.

In my opinion, what’s not so great is that it can take quite a while. When dealing with soft surfaces, I had to apply the cleaner and leave it to sit for up to five hours. It took up most of the afternoon to eliminate my dog's messes, but it worked.

So in the case of this enzyme cleaner, patience is a virtue. In our tests, when left on for long enough, it removed stains no matter how set in or old they were. You can use it as a spot clear, in a carpet cleaning machine and as a pre-treat for laundry.

The product comes in two sizes - a standard spray bottle or a big 1-gallon canister. When choosing between them, keep in mind that you don’t need a lot of product to remove a stain, but if you deal with pet messes frequently, the bulk option is much more cost-effective.

  • Works on old stains
  • Nozzle easily breaks

The natural formula of the Wee Care cleaner makes it a suitable product for everyday use. In fact, I was able to spray my dog’s potty spot daily to prevent stains and odours from forming, which I love. To use it, let it set for a few minutes before rinsing the area with warm water.

#5: Best Odour Removal: OUT! Urine Destroyer

OUT! Urine Destroyer
  • Good value for money
  • Great at neutralizing odours
  • Suitable for carpets and upholstery
  • Ideal for all kinds of waterproof surfaces
  • Pleasant smell

The Urine Destroyer from OUT! PetCare is another good product specifically designed to remove urine stains. Like our number one product, it also eliminates other pet messes, including vomit, drool, and, yes, poop.

This product didn’t test the best for removing actual stains, but it will certainly eliminate the smell, this is thanks to the concentrated formula based on bacteria and enzymes, which neutralize urine odour.

For best results, our team of independent experts soaked the affected surface with the cleaner and let it stay for a couple of hours or until it dries. This was necessary so the enzymes can penetrate the surfaces and destroy the urine.

Overall, this is a simple and effective product that is affordable.

How Do Enzyme Cleaners Work?

First, what are we talking about when we say “enzyme cleaners”?

“Enzymes are macromolecular biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions; this usually occurs in the body, but in the case of enzymatic cleaners, the process is used for a different purpose. In a nutshell, different enzymes break down different types of stains.” - Lauren Corona, Chicago Tribunal (1)

Enzymes are used in various cleaning products and have been for quite a long time. It’s a blanket term that covers different types of enzymes, and not all of them will work on every stain, as mentioned.

The group of enzymes that should be able to break down urine stains is called protease. But, that’s more of a fun fact than something you need to know since enzyme cleaner products typically don’t list the exact enzymes they are using. You are more likely to see something like “microbial mixture” on the ingredient list.

The most important thing about enzymes is that they work differently from most other cleaning products. They do not mask the smell - instead, they get to the source and help eliminate it:

“Enzymatic cleaners denature (destroy) the proteins and enzymes that make up the pheromones in dog pee. This not only helps to get rid of the dog urine smell, but it also decreases the chances of your dog being a repeat offender in that same spot.” - Tiffany Tupler, DVM, PetMD (2)

How to Use Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners work differently than most other cleaning products. During our testing phase, our team of independent experts quickly learned that the goal is not to spray the stain and then scrub it away. Instead, you want to let the enzyme cleaner soak the same surface that the urine did.

“Completely wetting the area with a cleaner that has an enzyme in it will do the best job of removing the odours” - Chris Puls, Dogs Naturally (3)

And once that’s done, you wait. This is especially true when it comes to porous materials that can soak up a lot of liquid, such as carpets or any kind of fabric. With such stains, you want to soak the area well and give the enzymes time to do their magic.

With stubborn stains you will likely have to repeat the process a couple of times, so don’t give up too easily!

My Final Verdict

What is the best dog wee spray available? Well, one that works. But truth be told, all options on our list should be effective if used properly. These are the ones our team of independent experts put to the test, with the cooperation with our four-legged besties, of course!

We concluded that Nature’s Miracle is a tried and true option, but some people don’t like its smell. If that’s the case with you, go ahead and try some of the other options.

FAQ

How effective are enzyme cleaners?

In general, enzyme cleaners for dog urine should be effective. However, it’s important to remember that they usually target very specific stains. That is to say, an enzyme cleaner made for pet messes should work to remove specific smells, but don’t expect it to be a comprehensive cleaning solution.

How long does it take for enzyme cleaners to work?

Enzyme cleaners can take some time to work. You should always leave the product on the stain for at least a few minutes. The process will take longer if the stain is very deep (or old) and the material is very porous. In these cases, you should let the product soak in completely and then dry. Repeat the process for very persistent stains.

How do I know if the enzyme cleaner worked?

Dogs have a much stronger sense of smell than we do. So, a stain that might appear to be gone to us is still present to our dogs with their super sense of smell. If your dog is sniffing at the spot, looking like they might be beginning the peeing process or physically peeing there, it didn't work (obviously).

There is another and easier way to detect urine stains - by using a blacklight. The specific wavelengths that UV lamps produce will make the urine glow. This might be a good solution if you are dealing with persistent and hidden urine stains.

Are enzyme cleaners safe to use around children & pets?

The enzymes in the cleaners are non-toxic and totally safe to use around pets and humans.

However, keep in mind that some enzyme cleaners contain other ingredients. Depending on the product, there might be additives in there that are harmful to pets. So, either check the ingredient list on the specific product you are using or keep pets & children away until the cleaning is done to stay on the safe side.
