The Best Value for Money

Sunshine Solution Dog Brush

  • Good value for money
  • Suits all fur types
  • 5 interchangeable brush heads for customised grooming

You likely let your dog’s hair get a little wilder over the winter months. With summer around the corner, it’s time to get the grooming kit out!

Shedding increases dramatically over the warmer half of the year. A good dog brush is the way to cut down on the tufts of shedding hair all over your lovely furniture.

So in today’s article, we’ll break down the very best dog brushes for your dog. We’ll take into account your dog’s coat length, coat type and size to match you with the best dog brush on the Australian market. Sound good? Let’s dive in.

How to Find the Best Dog Brush For Your Dog

Dog grooming is highly personal. Like humans, dogs all have different hair textures that behave differently with different brush types. The tools you would use to comb through a German Shepherd’s double-coated thick fur are very different to that of a Jack Russel.

So there are a few factors to consider when shopping for the best dog brush for your pup.

Here’s what you need to know.

Your Dog’s Hair Type

Your dog’s hair or fur type is the crux of everything. It’s not just the texture but also layers. Let me explain the different types of fur coats and the best brushes for them. We’ll dive deeper into the brush types in the next section.

Smooth coat

If your dog has a smooth coat, it’s a straight fur type that typically lies quite flat against your dog’s skin. It feels smooth and silky to the touch. It’s generally quite short too. Imagine a Dachshund’s coat - smooth and shiny. Because they have this hair texture, it’s easy to think you don’t need to pay much attention. While these dogs need the least amount of grooming, don’t mistake that for no grooming at all.

You still need a bristle brush and maybe even a pin brush to loosen any dander. It will also help with cutting down shedding hairs.

Curly coat

Curly coats are what they sound like. Quite thick and curly. Poodles have curly coats, as do Portuguese Water Dogs (like Obama’s dog!). The curls lie close to the body and can be tangled easily if you don’t take the time to brush your dog thoroughly and often.  Curly coat dogs do well with slicker brushes.

Double coat

Remember when I said that dog coats have layers? Well, some lucky or unlucky pups have two layers of fur. Newfoundlands are a good example. They have the topcoat and an undercoat. The undercoat keeps them insulated in cold weather. That’s why you typically see undercoats with winter dog breeds.

Although you would think it would be a burden in the summer, undercoats are best left alone. There’s no need to remove the undercoat by shaving it unless it’s impacted, unruly fur. (1) Generally, you can tame the shedding using an undercoat rake.

Wire coat

Wire coats are quite interesting. You typically see wire coats on Terriers. The largest wire coat dog is likely the Irish Wolfhound. They have thick strands that can tangle easily.

Wire coat dogs are not difficult to groom. However, you do need to stay on top of your dog’s grooming routine to prevent matting and tangles.

Slicker brushes and pin brushes are the most helpful for wire coat dogs. Bristles crushes are pretty useless.

Long coat

Long coat dogs like German Shepherds and Irish Setters are characterised by huge amounts of shedding and long fluffy fur. It’s not entirely true that all long coat dogs shed. The Old English Sheepdog for example is notorious for not shedding that much.

Regardless of shedding levels, long coat dogs usually need more maintenance than short-haired dog breeds.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing! Grooming your dog often is a beautiful opportunity to bond.

“Your dog will learn that it’s okay to allow his body and feet to be handled; you will be building trust with your canine companion. As for you, it’s very relaxing and satisfying to spend more time with your dog while helping him look and feel his best.” - Hilary Erb from the American Kennel Club (2)

To that end, you have the opportunity to spend more quality time grooming a long-haired dog.

They need bristle and pin brushes to maintain a tangle-free, healthy coat.

Types of Dog Brushes

Bristle brush

A bristle brush has medium-sized soft, flexible strands. The strands can be densely packed which makes them firmer. Alternatively, the bristles can be more spaced out and looser for a gentler brush through. The density of the bristle brush you choose will depend on your dog’s fur type. Bristle brushes are good all-round brushes.

They most accurately pull-out excess shedding hair from the top coat of any dog. Short-haired dogs might find super firm brushes uncomfortable since their fur is close to their skin.

Pin brush

Pin brushes hand hard plastic strands and a little pin-like ball at the end. The strands tend to be quite spaced out as the purpose is mainly to detangle and dislodge dirt. It’s great for dander.

It’s common to see brushes with dual ends; one side will be a normal bristle and one side will be a pin brush.

Undercoat rake

For dog’s with undercoats, a little extra care is needed. An undercoat rake is a fantastic tool that is literally like magic. It wades through the fluffy underbelly of your dog’s long coat and gently teases out excess fur. For heavy shedding dogs, an undercoat rake is extremely helpful.

You can identify them by their rake-like appearance. They have metal teeth that are quite close together. The wider apart the rake, the better it is for curly coated dogs.

Slicker brush

Slicker brushes have metal teeth like undercoat rakes. However, they look more similar to a traditional brush, just with very fine metal teeth. These teeth are incredible at teasing out knots, tangles, and locks. It can take some time to work through the tangles on a long-haired dog, but a good slicker brush can cut the time in half.

They typically have a curved shape because matting usually occurs close to the body in hard-to-reach places. For example, armpits, ears, back of the legs and chest.

Rubber brush

The rubber dog brush is less relevant as a grooming tool for de-shedding and de-matting. Essentially you would use a rubber brush when you are washing your dog. Never use a rubber brush on your dog’s fur dry. It’ll hurt and only contribute to the tangles. But when wet, a rubber brush creates a soothing massage sensation on the skin and helps you distribute shampoo through your dog’s fur.

In honesty, this is more of an optional tool to me. You can easily use your fingers or a regular brush. However, rubber brushes do give that extra bit of massaging luxury if you so choose to purchase one.

Qualities of a Great Dog Brush

Size

In theory, you could use any sized brush for any sized dog. It’s more relevant to match the brush to the fur type than the size of the dog.

However, there is nothing more soul-crushing than working through the fur coat of a large fluffy dog with a tiny pin brush. I know because I’ve done it. It takes a huge amount of time and feels almost Sisyphean.

For the sake of your sanity, it’s best to get the appropriate size for your dog’s size and even body type. You can even get curved dog brushes that work around the contours of your dog’s body. These are great for large dogs.

Build quality

You want high-quality materials in all of your dog apparel from leashes to dog bowls. That said, pay even closer attention when it comes to grooming tools.

Even though dog brushes are quite cheap, to replace, it’s worth finding options that can hold up with repeated use. The most fragile and uncomfortable the brush appears to be, the less you’ll use it. Dogs with long coats or undercoats rely on good grooming routines for comfort in the warmer months. You don’t want to buy a dog brush that snaps or has falling bristles because it won’t last you through the summer!

Comfortable handles

I don’t know if you’ve ever spent all afternoon brushing a dog. I have. My late German Shepherd, Max, took ages to brush through properly. I could sit there for 30mins to an hour brushing each section of his luscious, thick long hair.

It was massaging and lovely for him. But for me, it was a recipe for hand cramps every five minutes. Because of the discomfort, I actively avoided grooming my fluffy dog.

Trust me - you do not want to overlook the ergonomics of a good dog brush. You want to make sure it’s comfortable for you to brush your dog for quite some time - particularly if you have a big fluffy monster to groom!

#2: Budget-Friendly Option: Dr Zoo Bamboo Grooming Brush

Dr Zoo Bamboo Grooming Brush
  • Well made
  • Good value for money
  • Dual-sided brush for versatile grooming

On the simpler end, we have the dual-sided Dr Zoo grooming brush. It has the typical bristle side and a pin brush side.

The bristle side is quite wide set. This means it’s relatively gentle on the skin. It will suit short coats and daily use on topcoats. The pin brush is sturdy and can work through thick undercoats.

The brush isn’t too large so I personally wouldn’t recommend it to those with large dog breeds. It may take a long time to brush a St Bernard with this brush! Though the bamboo handle would certainly be up to the task.

Best of all, this little brush isn’t too expensive at all. For the tough bamboo quality, it’s very good value for money. Top marks from us!

Great brush, digs deep, hide it from the puppy though!
"This is a great brush. It really got down to the undercoat of my mini schnauzer. Great quality. Unfortunately I left it in reach of the puppy who had a great time chewing about 3 inches off the wooden handle! Still usable but aargh a reminder of why we can't have nice things!"

#3: Best Dog Brush for Short Hair: Kazoo Double Sided Combo Brush

Kazoo Double Sided Combo Brush
  • Versatile
  • Double-sided
  • Good value for money

Short-haired dog breeds are quite easy to work with when it comes to grooming. They rarely need daily attention. Even wiry coat breeds can get away with a weekly brush. The biggest issues you may face with short hair are dirt, dander and occasionally tangles with wire coat breeds.

With all this in mind, I recommend the Kazoo combo brush to cover all bases. This follows the normal double-sided model with a pin side and a bristle side. Though there’s one big difference. The bristle side has pin bristles woven into it. The idea is to be able to detangle as well as softly remove dander.

It’s a nice basic brush that will do well for any grooming routine. It’s of particular value to owners of short-haired dog breeds.

#4: Best Dog Brush for Long Hair: Wahl Large Pin Bristle Brush

Wahl Large Pin Bristle Brush
  • Double-sided
  • Well made
  • Soft ergonomic handle is great for long grooming sessions

On the opposite end, long-haired breeds need a very trustworthy dog brush indeed. It needs to be able to tackle tangles and fluffy textures with ease. You could probably tackle a long-haired fur coat with the Kazoo, but the quality is a little cheaper than the Wahl Pin Bristle Brush.

The Wahl Large Pin Bristle Brush being tested by our independent expert team.

Wahl Large Pin Bristle Brush being tested by our review team.

I’m recommending the Wahl because it really packs a punch. The dual sides are made for larger dog breeds with fluffier, longer hair. The pins are spaced out for easy detangling. The bristles are high quality and firm.

The large size makes it a clear choice for slightly larger dogs to cover more ground. But it could work well for medium dog breeds or even small dogs with super long hair like a Shih Tzu.

The ergonomic handle helps you get a comfortable grip as you groom your dog. The sturdier grip also helps you with leverage as you tease out any knots and tangles.

This is a fantastic, high-quality choice for long-haired dog breeds who need some extra attention.

Works but be gentle
"I have three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels all with different lengths of fur. It definitely gets the loose hair out of my two very fluffy ones. But just be careful as the bristles are rather sharp. I always tend on the soft side with my fussy dogs. I would recommend the brush though."

#5: Best Brush for Dog Undercoat Removal: CHANNCI Pet Dematting Comb 2 in 1 Undercoat Rake

CHANNCI Pet Dematting Comb 2 in 1 Undercoat Rake
  • Dual-sided for complete undercoat care
  • Anti-slip handle
  • Good value for money
  • Well reviewed

If you have a dog with a double coat, you need to keep the undercoat well maintained. Now “undercoat removal” isn’t really necessary. When we talk about a brush for undercoat removal, we really mean a brush that will remove excess shedding hair from the undercoat. As the weather gets warmer, the majority of the shedding will come from the undercoat layers. It’s worth thinning with an effective brush.

And which brush do we need for an undercoat? An undercoat rake.

The CHANNCI Pet Dematting Comb 2 in 1 Undercoat Rake being tested by our independent expert team.

CHANNCI Pet Dematting Comb 2 in 1 Undercoat Rake being tested by our review team.

The CHANNCI undercoat rake is quite impressive. It has a double-sided nature with a fine metal tooth side and a larger de-matting metal tooth side.

The de-matting side has curved teeth that teases out matted fur incredibly easily. Excess fur and tangles don’t stand a chance.

The side wiith the finer teeth is perfect for thinning and deshedding.

The ergonomic design and anti-slip handle make it comfortable to use for the entire grooming session. This is a great brush to tackle unruly undercoats!

Really gets mats out easily!
"We brush our groodle regularly with our Chris Christenson slick brush which is usually good at getting matts out. However there are some stubborn spots (under armpits, rear end, where her harness/collar rub) which can get really bad. This dematting comb seriously helps! It gets the matts out very easily!
Be careful though it does tug on the dogs hair to pull the matt out so be careful and work slowly through your dog. We managed to pull out enough dead fur to make ourselves another dog! Would definitely recommend! Love how the other side of the tool, finer comb, is really good at removing loose undercoat hair and the price is great!"

#6: Best De-shedding Brush for Dogs: HERTZKO Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for Dogs

HERTZKO Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for Dogs
  • Suitable for all dog sizes
  • Self-cleaning mechanism
  • Comfortable handle

The HERTZKO Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush is our pick for the detangling category. With a wide base and excellent retracting bristle technology, this brush is perfect for that mass of fluff that may be plaguing your pup.

The metal bristles wade through tangles and excess fur in no time at all. To activate the self-cleaning mode, all you need to do is press the button on the top of the brush. Pressing that will retract the metal bristles. From there, you can wipe away the excess fur that is normally stuck in the bristles.

The Final Verdict: Best Dog Hair Brush

The best dog hairbrush for your pup depends on the issue you’re trying to tackle. The best deshedding tool for dogs is the Hertzco slicker brush. It’s extremely effective at handling matted fur. A slicker brush is essential for all dog owners with long-haired breeds.

However, if you just want to get started with a good all-round dog brush, the Sunshine Solution brush ticks all of the boxes. It’s not an expert at anyone brushing technique but covers all of the bases reasonably well.

FAQ

Which dog breeds shed the most?

Shayna Meliker from Vet Street cites the following as the top ten most shedding dog breeds. (3):

  • Saint Bernards
  • Great Pyrenees
  • Chow Chows
  • Akitas
  • Siberian Huskies
  • Golden Retrievers
  • German Shepherds (I can attest to that!)
  • Labrador Retrievers
  • Alaskan Malamutes
  • Alaskan Huskies

How often do you need to brush your dog?

The frequency with which you brush your dog depends on their coat type. (4)

Some long-haired dog breeds are recommended to be groomed every single day. It’s unlikely that you’ll have that kind of time, but that’s the recommendation. It’s more important to have a high grooming frequency during the summer months when long-haired and undercoated breeds are more likely to shed quite heavily.

Short-haired dog breeds need far less intensive grooming schedules. You can groom a short-haired dog once or twice a week. Sometimes even less frequently depending on the breed.

Wore coat dogs need grooming at least twice per week to prevent tangles.

Best Dog Grooming Table (2022 Buyers Guide)

The Best Dog Grooming Table Australia - A Review

Our #1 Pick

Hydraulic Z-Lift Dog Cat Pet Grooming Table

The Best Value for Money

Hydraulic Z-Lift Dog Cat Pet Grooming Table

  • Adjustable height with hydraulic mechanism
  • Very stable
  • Non-slip surface on top
  • Includes a grooming arm and 1 grooming loop
  • High weight capacity

While it’s not always the first thing we have in mind when we think about our canine companions, some dogs need lots of grooming. And they need it often (1).

If that’s the case with your pooch, you might be considering setting up your own DIY grooming station at home. Or maybe you are thinking about starting a grooming business?

Either way, this guide is designed to help you find the best dog grooming table in Australia.

What to Look for in a Grooming Table for Dogs

Grooming a dog is not just a matter of appearance and having a fancy haircut. It can also be essential for keeping a dog happy and healthy (2).

Before we suggest some grooming tables for you, we need to talk about the things you need to know to choose the right table. When it comes to grooming tables, no one product should work for everyone.

Related: Best Dog Grooming Course Australia.

Especially if you plan to use your table at home, you need to take a lot of factors into consideration. While the first instinct could be to just get a quality, professional-level table, you also need to be aware of whether you have enough space for such a thing as well as how you are going to set up your grooming station. Will you need water in the same area? What about a power outlet? You’ll probably need that to plug in your clippers and/or dryer.

The best thing to do before you start shopping for a grooming table is to figure out where you are going to set it up and which dimensions would fit. Building on this, you’ll be able to think through all the additional features you want or need in your new dog grooming station.

Here is a list of everything you need to consider before settling on a new grooming table:

The Weight of Your Dog

First thing’s first, we need to figure out the weight capacity you want from your table. Knowing the weight capacity of the table in question is very important because it can make or break the experience you will have with it. Some tables look super sturdy, but they actually are not and can only hold small canines. Especially if you want to use your grooming table for dogs over 20 kg, make sure to check if the table can support the weight to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Dog Size

Another thing to consider is the size of your dog. Grooming tables come in a variety of sizes, from small to extra-large. Dogs usually need to stand up during the grooming session, so you’ll want to measure the area your dog needs to stand comfortably on all four paws. Having a table that is not big enough can be quite dangerous since the dog might fall down easily. When in doubt, always go a size larger.

Table Build Quality

The build quality is definitely what determines the lifespan of a grooming table. A table with flimsy aluminium legs will never last as long as a table with a stable stand made of powder-coated iron or stainless steel. Of course, a super heavy-duty table is not always what you need, but you might sacrifice durability for convenience in this case.

Related: Best Dog Clippers Australia.

Portability and Storage

Again, the most heavy-duty tables are most stable and durable, but they are also usually not very easy to fold up and store away. On the other hand, it is possible to find lightweight tables that are easily foldable and even portable. However, these don’t usually have a very high weight capacity.

Adjustability

Not all grooming tables have adjustable height, but we highly recommend getting one that does. Being able to adjust the level of the table will make working on your dog’s coat much more comfortable for you and it can save you a lot of back pain.

Best Dog Grooming Tables 2022: Our Top Picks

Ready to see some actual grooming tables? Below are the best options we have found.

Hydraulic Z-Lift Dog Cat Pet Grooming Table

What sets this product apart from the rest?

  • Adjustable height with hydraulic mechanism
  • Very stable
  • Non-slip surface on top
  • Includes a grooming arm and 1 grooming loop
  • High weight capacity

If you are looking for a grooming table that will last forever, and that can adapt to the grooming needs of small and large dogs alike then this hydraulic option from vidaXL can be just what you need.

This table might not have any flashy extra features, but it is sturdy, stable, and made to do its job well. First of all, what makes this table different (and more expensive) than most others is the hydraulic lifting mechanism. This allows you to adjust the height of the table (from 54 to 94 centimetres) even with a heavy dog on the table. This is great because it allows you to achieve the perfect height without the awkward moment where you need to convince a dog to jump on the table. The weight capacity of this table is 60 kilograms, which is more than most competitors can offer.

The base and the adjustable legs on this grooming table are made from powder-coated iron. This makes sure that the table is tough and stable, although it also makes it heavy. The grooming arm that’s also included is made of stainless steel instead of iron. Stainless steel is used here because it is resistant to corrosion and rust, so water and other debris won’t damage your equipment.

The surface of the table itself is covered with a high-quality rubber coating that prevents slipping. Overall, this is a great table for grooming at home - if you have the space for it.

  • Well-made and durable
  • Good value for money
  • Non-slip rubber tabletop included
  • Grooming arm with 2 loops included
  • Foldable

This affordable grooming table from vidaXL brings you all the essential features you need from a good grooming table at a much more modest price than professional products.

So what exactly is included? Let’s start with the tabletop. The dimensions of the platform are 91 x 61 centimetres. That’s fairly large although it might not be enough for very large dogs, so keep that in mind. For small and medium breeds, though, this is a very comfortable area to stand on. The surface of the table is covered with a rubber mat to make it less slippery for the canine feet.

The table stands on sturdy legs made of powder-coated iron. The legs fold under the table when not in use, thus making this table essentially portable, and very easy to fold up and put away for storage. Still, the legs are strong enough to support dogs that weigh up to 60 kg.

In addition to this, this vidaXL grooming table comes with a removable grooming arm that clamps onto the table. The grooming arm also comes with two grooming loops. The height of the grooming arm is adjustable, but the table height is not. The tabletop stands at 77cm.

Overall, it’s a great product both for using at home and bringing to shows, for example.

#5: Foldable Grooming Table With Adjustable Height: The Clipper Shop Height Adjustable Table Large

The Clipper Shop Height Adjustable Table Large
  • Adjustable tabletop height
  • Adjustable grooming arm height
  • Foldable legs
  • Storage basket included
  • Rubber mat included in colour of choice

This grooming table from the Clipper Shop is another great option that is both foldable and has an adjustable tabletop height. Adjustable height is not that common in this price range, but we know how helpful this feature can be, especially if you spend a lot of time grooming.

The tabletop height on this table is adjustable to anywhere between 75 and 90 centimetres, so you’ll always be able to find the ideal working position.

Another great feature about this table is that it is foldable too. Now, that’s uncommon: a table that is both adjustable and foldable. On top of that, there is a handy storage basket between the legs of the table that you can use to store all the gear you are not using at the moment. It’s a small feature, but also very handy.

Other than that, this table also includes a grooming arm and a grooming loop. The height of the grooming arm can also be adjusted. In short, the table comes with everything you need to start using it right away.

The tabletop is also covered with a non-slip rubber mat. You can choose the colour of your mat too for a personal signature - blue, purple, and pink versions are available

Aeolus Low-Low PRO Electric Lifting Table with Air Switch
  • Perfect for dogs of all breeds, even with mobility issues
  • Electric lifting mechanism
  • High weight capacity
  • Power plug-in points for tools
  • Functional design

When we talk about professional grooming tables, this is what we picture. The Aeolus Low-Low PRO Electric Lifting Table is probably the best grooming table you can find in Australia.

So where should we start? Perhaps with the lifting mechanism. This is an electric grooming table, so it will adjust the tabletop level with just a push of a button. Moreover, the height is adjustable between 25 and 107 centimetres. The fact that the table gets so low means that even dogs with mobility issues and elderly dogs can step on the surface easily. The electric mechanism will simply lift them up to the desired height. Considering that the weight capacity of this table is 150 kg, this should be possible with almost any dog in the world.

The working surface on this table measures 126 x 65 cm. The Table includes an H-frame grooming arm complete with 2 nylon loops. It’s also full of handy features to make the grooming experience easier. For example, there are power points (including USB ports) for plugging in your tools. Keep in mind that they shouldn’t be used for tools that use lots of energy, like hair dryers. There are also stainless-steel hooks under the table for hanging your tools, as well as a drawer for storing smaller objects.

Final Verdict

What is the best grooming table for dogs? It highly depends on the dog, as well as your needs and the space you have available. If you want a full-featured grooming table that will even lift the dog up for you, then the Hydraulic Z-Lift Dog Cat Pet Grooming Table might be a great option.

However, this table is also very heavy and not easy to pack up for storage. If you want something more mobile, perhaps the SHELANDY Professional Pet Grooming Table can do the job. And if you already have a table that you want to transform into a grooming station, the Master Equipment Zinc-Plated Steel Overhead Pet Grooming Arm turns any table into a grooming table.

FAQ

What size grooming table do I need for my dog?

You’ll need a table that will allow the dog to stand comfortably on the tabletop. The table should not be just big enough for the dog to fit on it. Rather, the dog should be able to stand comfortably with a couple of inches on each side to spare. If you are getting a table for your own dog, then you can easily measure the dog and look for a table in the right dimensions. For salons, it’s a different story, but a table that’s 1 meter long should be good enough for most breeds - except the largest ones.

Do you need a grooming table to groom a dog?

A grooming table is not necessary to groom a dog, but it is very helpful. Having a grooming table will allow you to restrain the dog safely, work on grooming without having to bend at an awkward angle and have access from all sides.

Are dog grooming tables safe?

Yes, dog grooming tables are safe, as long as you use them right. Always make sure that the table has the right weight capacity and that it’s big enough for the dog you are grooming.

What do dog groomers use to keep dogs still?

Dog groomers use the grooming noose (sometimes called the grooming loop) to keep the dogs in place. This is a leash loop that hangs down from the grooming arm and goes around the dog’s neck.

5 Best Dog Grooming Kits Australia (2022 Buyers Guide)

The Best Dog Grooming Kit -
All The Tools, Supplies & Equipment

Our #1 Pick

FANTASON Professional Pet Grooming Kit

The Best Value for Money

FANTASON Professional Pet Grooming Kit

  • Wireless clippers
  • Suitable for all breeds
  • Great value for money

A dog grooming kit is essential for any savvy dog owner to maintain the health and happiness of their dog.

Though professional dog grooming is generally still encouraged for most people, you can’t go wrong with a trusty set at home for any emergency situations. (1)

We’re talking about those matted dreadlocks your long-haired dog can get behind their ears or the snagged nail that needs a quick snip. Having the flexibility to deal with such things at home is very welcomed for most dog owners.

Likewise, perhaps you just love the process of grooming your dog in general! It is certainly a special bonding experience that you can have with your dog. (2) It is for us and our dogs! So, in today’s article, we will cover a general guide to grooming tools, the best kits available in Australia, and our overall best choice for you. Let’s dive in.

dog being combed

A Guide to Dog Grooming Accessories

It’s a bit confusing when you start searching for a dog grooming kit, isn’t it? There is a whole myriad of products that these kits contain and you may not be certain as to which products you actually need for your dog. Here is a rundown of what you can expect in a decent set of dog grooming products.

Clippers

So, we are starting off with a grooming product that is not particularly essential to all breeds but is completely essential to a select few, dog clippers. Clippers are great for shaping super curly fur, as well as providing relief from heavy undercoats with certain breeds (if your vet recommends it).  Breeds like Poodles, Bichon Frises, and Portuguese Water Dogs are the key target market for a great pair of clippers. (3)

When searching for clippers, you want to pay attention to a few key things. One is the material of the blades. Most clippers will come with standard stainless steel blades. They are strong and durable to frequent use. The stainless properties of the steel resist rusting over time. The moisture and oils of your dog’s fur can rust and decay cheaper metals.

That said, a more premium experience for your dog could be the ceramic blade clippers. Ceramic blades stay cooler for longer whilst clipping your dog. They are also generally a lot sharper than stainless steel without special attention from a honing service. That said, stainless steel is the more common option for most due to the reasonable price point.

A decent set should come with various clipper attachments to help you adjust the size and edge of the clippers.

Combs

No grooming kit is complete without a decent, tensile comb. You need a good comb to guide your haircuts, but also to get through any matting or knotting in your dog’s fur coat. Most dog grooming combs have variable width between their teeth. Perhaps the area you are combing and/or the curl pattern of your dog’s hair requires different comb types. Wide-tooth combs are better for dogs with very curly hair, whereas fine-tooth combs are completely fine for silky and straight-haired dogs.

The standard comb you are likely to get in a grooming kit is a straight, stainless steel comb. As we mentioned with the clippers, stainless steel is ideal as it lasts longer than plastic would. It is rare to see plastic combs in dog grooming sets but it does happen.

There are special dematting combs too. These tend to have cerated edges and a curved look to them. The curved claw-like structure helps to tease out the matted fur. They look quite aggressive but only a gentle hand is needed for this to work.

Scissors

Dog grooming scissors are a must for all at-home groomers. Sure the clippers are faster but they lack precision. Scissors can also help soften the harsh edges with your cuts. There are a few different types of scissors.

Straight scissors

Straight scissors are the standard straight-edged blades that help with most of your chopping needs. A decent dog grooming kit will at the very least have these. Scissors can come with rounded tips that are a bit more beginner friendly as they protect your dog from getting nipped by the sharp end of the blades.

Thinning scissors

Thinning scissors consist of one full straight blade and one serrated blade that serves to thin your dog’s coat. This is a great alternative to thinning with clippers. Thinning with clippers can be a bit dramatic. Using thinning scissors allows for a softer look to your dog’s hairdo!

Curved scissors

Curved scissors are ideal for following the smooth curved lines of your dog’s body. You need them most in areas like the legs, torso, and also possibly the face and forehead. Curved scissors are somewhat of a luxury in grooming sets but there are wonderful if you can find them!

Nail Clippers & Grinders

Simple but essential! Nail clippers & nail grinders have a very different shape and strength to human toenail clippers, so it is always best to use tools for grooming dogs specifically. A decent pair of dog nail clippers or grinders can save you a lot of strife should a rogue nail appear.

Best Dog Grooming Equipment 2022 Reviewed

So, we have the basic components of a complete grooming kit. What kits do we recommend you buy in Australia? Here we are going to review the very best options for your pooch.

FANTASON Professional Pet Grooming Kit

What sets this product apart from the rest?

  • Wireless clippers
  • Suitable for all breeds
  • Great value for money

Fantason has packaged a really fantastic collection of grooming supplies in this all-encompassing kit. Let’s start by breaking down the clippers. Interestingly enough, Fantason has included clippers that have both titanium blades and ceramic blades. The ceramic side is the moveable side. You can ensure that these will start super sharp for a long time, and not cause too much overheating.

The motor is powerful, shearing through the thickest of doggy fur. Therefore many breeds will get on with these clippers. Whilst the clippers are wireless, they have a lithium battery that needs recharging. A handy LCD display will let you know how much battery life you have left. There are four adjustable comb attachments for the clippers too.

The FANTASON Professional Pet Grooming Kit being tested by our independent expert team.

FANTASON Professional Pet Grooming Kit being tested by our review team.

Due to the power of the clippers, this grooming kit is suitable for a wide range of breeds. Breeds with dense fur like Poodles and Bichon Frises will be just fine with the Fantason Grooming Kit. This versatility is why we placed this set at the top of our list. It’s the ideal choice for all dogs!

Onto the secondary items and you get one of everything you need. The simple straight stainless steel scissors are perfectly fine for giving your dog a haircut. There is also a pair of nail clippers and a rasp to shape and file your dog’s nails. A comb with a fine-tooth end and a wide-tooth end is extremely useful. A cleaning brush and oil for the maintenance of the set is a great addition too.

We are a little disappointed that there wasn’t a set of thinning scissors included in the pack as they are very useful when grooming your dog at home. We will forgive them though because the price point is truly fantastic. Reviews rave about this set and at such a reasonable price, you would be hard-pressed to find a better option!

Pet Union Professional Dog Grooming Kit
  • Wireless clippers
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Two pairs of scissors

The Pet Union kit is the perfect all-in-one! It is comprised of 12 pieces for all your grooming needs. Starting with the clippers, these are ergonomically designed to fit nicely in your hand as you clip your dog’s fur. It has a low vibration so the noise won’t startle your dog too much. They in fact claim it to be “whisper quiet”.

A fantastic feature of the clippers is the rechargeable battery. Many clippers use lithium batteries so this is hugely helpful to be able to recharge the clippers yourself with the charger provided. The clippers are completely wireless and come with four different guide combs. The blades of the clippers are a premium titanium steel, leading to a longer-lasting product.

ThePet Union Professional Dog Grooming Kit being tested by our independent expert team.

Pet Union Professional Dog Grooming Kit being tested by our review team.

Onto the scissors and the Pet Union kit contains two pairs of scissors; a straight pair and some thinning scissors. Both are stainless steel, sharp, and effective on light to medium density fur.

For your dog’s nails, there is a trusty pair of small nail clippers included in the kit. There is also a rasp/file to file down your dog’s nails if needed. Filing your dog’s nails can be more labour intensive but it does produce soft results that are less likely to harm your dog as clippers.

There is one, long metal comb included in the Pet Union set that is relatively fine-toothed. This brings us to the cons. The reason this is a runner up and not the winner is because of its lack of versatility. The manufacturer says that this kit is ideal for light-medium duty work.

The dense fur of a Portuguese Water dog will likely be too much for this kit. We’d say that the Fantason is better value for money overall because of its flexibility in use on several different breeds and coat types. The Pet Union draws its price point from the high quality of the clippers which we think is worth it. But in the grand scheme of things, these grooming tools are only suitable for a certain type of dog.

Breeds who would suit the Pet Union set are Terriers, Retrievers, Spaniels, Shiba Inus, and Border Collies.

#3: Best Grooming Kit for Anxious Dogs: Scaredy Cut Silent Clipper

Scaredy Cut Silent Clipper
  • No electrical clippers
  • Silent cutting for anxious dogs
  • Money-back guarantee
  • Different packs for different needs

Firstly, can we just appreciate how wonderful a brand name “Scaredy Cut” is! We love a good pun.

The Scaredy Cut is made for anxious dogs who can’t handle the buzz of clippers - however “whisper quiet” they may be. The principle of this set is that you create your own clippers by using the scissors and clipping combs. Simply attach the comb guides you want to use and snip for a buzz-free experience.

The Scaredy Cut Silent Clipper being tested by our independent expert team.

Scaredy Cut Silent Clipper being tested by our review team.

The main pack contains 16pieces: 1 pair of scissors, 7 combs, 2 comb organisers, 4 rubber finger inserts, 1 grooming guide, and 1 storage bag. We think the rubber inserts are a fabulous addition because then you can adjust the fingerholes to suit you. The pink storage bag is neat, compact, and stylish.

That’s the main kit but we love that Scaredy Cut offer variations on this set. You can choose a pack that contains a dematting comb if matting is a frequent issue for your pup. The left-handed set is a blessing for the lefties out there who need it. There are also options to include a scissor sharpener to hone the scissors at home or a tiny trim scissor for super-precision snipping.

The Scaredy Cut is not the cheapest set in the world but it is good value for money. The manufacturer offers a money-back guarantee if you are unhappy with the product for any reason.

Again, there are no nail grooming accessories here which is a bit disappointing. A pair of nail clippers and a file would make this set complete. That is a nitpick though. Overall this is a wonderful, no-buss, clipping set for anxious, scaredy dogs.

Gimars 4CR Stainless Steel Dog Grooming Scissors Kit
  • 4 scissors
  • Rounded tips for safety
  • Durable titanium stainless steel
  • Good price point

If you’re just in the market for a reasonably priced set of grooming scissors, look no further than the Gimars kit. This colourful set is the ideal addition to your grooming equipment. Not all dogs need electric clipping, so this set is for you!

Titanium-coated stainless steel blades ensure the longevity of the set, staying sharp over time. All of the scissors have rounded tips for additional safety. This is why we highly recommend this scissors kit for beginners.

Enclosed are a pair of thinning scissors, curved scissors, straight scissors, and smaller 5.1inch straight scissors for more precision work.  There is also a storage sleeve and metal comb to complete the set. We would have loved to see some nail clippers here too but we recognise it is purely a scissor kit.

Another con is the comfort of the product. Reviewers report that the finger holes are a little small so this is best for those with small-medium hands.

That said, at such a great price, this scissor set is very complete. If you don’t need a clipper, this set won’t let you down.

Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Dog Clippers
  • Wireless clippers
  • 2 year warranty
  • Fast charging

So we spoke about dogs that may not need clippers. What about those of you who want a focus on the clippers? If the quality of the clippers in your dog’s grooming kit is the most important to you, we recommend the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro.

These clippers are phenomenal. The four adjustable clipping combs means you can customise the cut to your dog’s needs. The manufacturer claims that these powerful clippers work on dogs of a multitude of breeds, from Terriers to Poodles to Shiba Inus.

The Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Dog Clippers being tested by our independent expert team.

Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Dog Clippers being tested by our review team.

This is due to self-sharpening blades and strong motor. That said, they say this product is best used on fine to medium hair clipping. It can handle some double coat clipping but not to the same effectiveness.

The motor may be strong, but it is not noisy reportedly! They use a low-noise mechanism to keep from startling your pooch.

This wireless clipper can last 2 hours of continuous use and has the ability to quick charge for an extra boost of power. Simple quick charge for 15minutes to get 8 more minutes of use.

So, do they offer anything in this set outside of the clippers? Well yes! There is a pair of straight scissors, a plastic comb, and a hardy black case. These aren’t the highest quality but this is a clipper set first and foremost. The scissors and comb will work but may not be as durable as the other kits on this list.

Cons would be that to charge these in Australia, you would need a voltage converter to make them work. This is also the most pricey kit on the list with the least amount of accessories and items, so that is worth bearing in mind. The clippers are truly the focus here. However, in that vein, we love that Wahl offers a 2-year warranty on the product to give you peace of mind.

That said, if you want an amazing clipper set, you can’t go wrong with the Wahl model!

FAQ

How should you groom your dog at home?

You absolutely can groom your dog at home and given the state of the world in 2020, you probably were required to groom them at home as opposed to going to a professional. The process of grooming your dog is an intimate experience. Dr. Neil Marrinan told PetMD about the importance of trust when grooming your dog.

PRO TIP: “Your dog must be able to count on the reliability of your behavior, which means practicing a home grooming ritual regularly and incrementally (getting her used to being touched in sensitive spots, for example) and offering positive rewards (treats and attention) as you go,” Marrinan said. (4)

Once you have the right tools, it is best to have grooming routine. This involves bathing, brushing, nail clipping, clipping fur, and more precise hair cutting if you need to. If you set a regular routine to do this, your dog will get used to being groomed and may even enjoy it!

The Best Value for Money

Gimars 4CR Stainless Steel Dog Grooming Scissors Kit

During the recent madness, it’s safe to say we all need a good haircut. Whilst you may be searching for a trusty pair of shears for your own fur should you need to give yourself a haircut again, what about your dog?

Depending on the length and curl Pattern of your dog’s fur, your dog may need a haircut quite frequently.

A silky-haired dog may need a cut as often as every 4weeks, whereas a curly-haired dog may get away with a cut every 12 weeks. (1) It all depends on if they are prone to matting and knotting.

Whatever the case for your furry friend, grooming is a must for all of us and you need the perfect tools to do it.

For those perfectionist owners with dogs with unruly coats, or those that are starting a dog grooming course or company, this is the scissor buying guide for you!

Grooming fringe of white dog

What to Look for In A Pair of Grooming Scissors

As set of dog clippers and scissors are grooming staples, and pair of scissors is a pair of scissors, right? Wrong!

Would you cut your hair with your eight year old’s Crayola scissors? Then don’t subject your dog to that either. Human hair cutting shears are also not the best choice. There are a few key features of grooming scissors to look out for when making a purchase.

Purpose

“A professional groomer will usually have a set of scissors for different purposes to make sure they can do the best job possible for their customers’ dogs. If you intend to trim your dog’s fur yourself to maintain a basic cut, all you’ll need is a few good pairs of scissors and a metal dog comb”. The experts at DogGroomingTraining.com

This is key to choosing the right pair of grooming scissors. Straight scissors are great all-rounders and you can find them at several points of the budget scale. Curved scissors follow the contours of your dog’s body in those harder to reach places. Thinning scissors do what they say on the tin - thin your dog’s coat so are best used in the Summertime.

These are the main three types. If you think you may need all of them, you can opt for a professional scissor set which we have included in the buying guide later on.

For professional groomers, there are also chunker scissors and blending scissors. Both of these look quite similar to thinning scissors but they are focussed on aesthetic. Chunker scissors create a soft, texturised finish to your dog’s fur. Blending scissors are meant to blend, softening the edges of your cut. Groomers often use these around their four-legged clients’ faces for a natural finish.

Sharpness

Any scissors should be sharp but particularly pet grooming scissors. The blades of your chosen scissors need to create precise, quick snips. A dull blade leads to slipping hands and injury at worst or ugly haircuts for your pooch at best. Both of which you surely want to avoid. Opting for premium materials like stainless steel ensures the longevity and durability of the blades. There are rounded tipped models to prevent injuries if you are concerned about nipping your dog at any point.

Ergonomics

This all about your comfort when using the grooming scissors. Ergonomics contribute to your extended use of the product. Grooming your dogs will fast become the most irritating of chores if you don’t find the process comfortable. Dog grooming should be a bonding experience for both of you, so it is worth paying attention to your level of ease when choosing dog grooming scissors.

“Your dog will learn that it’s okay to allow his body and feet to be handled; you will be building trust with your canine companion. As for you, it’s very relaxing and satisfying to spend more time with your dog while helping him look and feel his best.”  Hilarie Erb from American Kennel Club.

For you to have this relaxing time, comfort is king.

Left-handed scissors are a marvel if there ever was one. Left-handed people make up 10% of the global population (or so scientists predict) so of course, we want to make sure you are also catered for when choosing grooming tools for your dog. (4)

Another factor in ergonomics is the comfort of your hands. Perhaps some handle shapes are more comfortable for you to use. If you are relatively new to grooming your dog, you will probably want to choose the most comfortable option for your hands, as you may be trying to work out the grooming process for a longer time than when you are a seasoned pro. If you have large hands, choose shears with large handles. Take into account how heavy the scissors may be if the manufacturer discloses that information.

Now that we have defined the properties of a fantastic pair of grooming scissors, let’s dive into the Australian market. What is on offer out here in the dog grooming world? Our best overall prize goes to...

We love the Gimars Kit because it ticks all of the boxes. The kit is so incredibly complete at a wonderful mid-range price point that won’t break the bank; no wonder so many purchasers love and rave about it!

The Gimars kit has everything you need to get started; thinning shears, straight shears, curved shears, and a small pairs of straight scissors to get into smaller areas. We really appreciate that all of the scissors in the kit come with rounded tips, so this is the perfect beginner’s set for any nervous first-time groomers.

The kit also contains a metal comb to help guide your precise snipping. The storage case is also handy.

The cons would be ergonomics. The finger holes are a little small. You can pop out the finger grips to widen the finger holes, but it is worth noting that small to medium-sized hands would fare better with the Gimars kit. This is also very much best for the amateur or beginner at-home groomer. As you get more confident with your abilities to do a quick spot snip of your dog’s fur when you need to, you may want to upgrade to a more premium set later down the line.

Overall, the Gimars Groom Kit is a very complete and fabulous value for money. Beginners and at-home groomers will love it.

This durable set is made of hardy stainless steel to last you through the ages. It has it all; thinning scissors, straight scissors, curved scissors, chunker scissors, a storage case, and a cleaning cloth. It also comes with an adjustable key so that you can adjust the tightness of the scissors if needed.

A bonus is the super cool design which adds to the professional polish of the set. The best part, however, is the price point! For such high-quality scissors, they are not too much more expensive than the Gimars set we recommended at the beginning of these reviews. That’s a wonderful plus to those looking to upgrade, but not spend too much in the process.

If you’re in the market for a more professional set, we think you’ll love the SmithKing product.

#4: Best Thinning Shears for Dogs: KAZOO Grooming Thinning Scissors

KAZOO Grooming Thinning Scissors
  • Well priced
  • Stainless steel
  • Easy to use

Dogs with very heavy coasts may be in need of dog thinning scissors. Our pick in this category is the Kazoo Grooming Scissors.

A simple but effective pair of scissors that will get the job done. These scissors are easy to use. The fur will thin away easily by using these shears. They are made of the hardiest stainless steel so you know these scissors will last you a while.

Ergonomically, these scissors don’t have detachable inner rings in the finger holes to adjust the size, so if they aren’t comfy for you, you have few options to change things.

We love that the Kazoo scissors come at a reasonable price point too, so it’s an accessible product to add to your toolkit.

#5: Best Curved Grooming Scissors: HASHIMOTO Curved Scissors for Dog Grooming

HASHIMOTO Curved Scissors for Dog Grooming
  • Stainless steel
  • Handmade
  • 3 models
  • Better comfort for larger hands

Curved scissors are ideal for following the contours of your dog’s body. Think back legs, ribcage, feet, and forehead. While curved groom scissors may not seem essential, it’s one of the “how did I ever like without this” things. It makes shearing your dog so much easiest and faster.

Our pick is the Hashimoto pair. These scissors come in 3 models: 6.5 inches, 6.5inches with a rounded tip, and 7.5 inches. The rounded tip may make you feel more confident if you are a beginner.

A huge plus is the ergonomics. The fingerholes are much much larger than some of the tiny finger holes that other models on this list have. There is definitely a bias for small hands when it comes to dog grooming it seems! The Hashimoto has you covered there.

The Hashimoto grooming scissors are made of Japanese stainless steel and are handmade with great care. This gives them an extra specialness which we love.

The only potential con could be the price point. These scissors are much more expensive than the Kazoo Thinning Scissors and the Total Care Scissors. Even the Gimars Scissor Set gives you four pairs of scissors, a storage sleeve, and a metal comb for only a tiny bit more money. Those who know and love the Hashimoto handmade scissors, however, believe they are worth the money.

This pair of scissors have been well-reviewed by amateur home-groomers and professional dog groomers alike. If they love it, we love it too! Check out the Hashimoto scissors if you’re in the market for durable curved pet scissors.

Made of durable Japanese stainless steel, these scissors are sure to last you a while. They have a professional quality that the company stands by. They even have a 1-year satisfaction guarantee in which they will rectify any issues you may have.

The finger holes on these scissors are large, so this allows more flexibility to consumers. They don’t offer any adjustable rings to make these smaller if you have smaller hands.

The main drawback is the price point; the complete set is not cheap. That said, you can also buy the scissors you need from the set individually. They may be pricey but they are well worth the splurge.

FAQ

How do you maintain grooming scissors?

Many people assume that scissors are maintained like knives. You hone them on whetstones for maximum sharpness and upkeep over time. Whilst honing is important to a degree, you maintain scissors in a completely different way to maintaining knives.

  • Here are the commonly agreed-upon best practices:
  • Lubricate the blades every so often with a little oil
  • Keep them as clean as possible between usage
  • Employ a professional to hone your shears once per year

Should you scissor cut your dog’s fur wet or dry?

Human hair and dog fur are different. The desired outcomes of your respective haircuts are also different...hopefully! You may like your hair to be cut wet but a dog’s fur is always best cut dry. (5) If for no other reason, think of yourself. With dry fur, you can better judge the results of your labours.

The properties of your dog’s hair changes when wet so you may be a little overzealous when cutting with wet fur, only to realise you have practically shaved them when their fur dries into its full glory. Or not so full in this case. You could equally find the opposite to be true depending yon your dog’s unique coat. Stick to dry cuts so you can keep track of your work more easily.

8 Best Dog Toothbrush Options Australia (2022 Buyers Guide)

The Overview

Our #1 Pick

Vet's Best Dental Kit

The Best Value for Money

Vet's Best Dental Kit

  • Allows simultaneous cleaning from all angles
  • Has a textured comfort grip handle
  • High-quality toothpaste included

Not a lot of pet parents know that brushing their dogs’ teeth should be an everyday activity. But it’s logical: the food gets stuck between the teeth, and they can’t get those bits out without our help. However, most dogs won’t stand still while you’re brushing their teeth. It’s a difficult task but getting a proper toothbrush can make your job faster and easier.

To help you pick the right dog toothbrush, we’ve researched different models and created a list of those we believe are the best.

But first, let’s see what features you should pay attention to when choosing the right product for your canine companion.

What To Look For In A Toothbrush For Dogs

Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions our canine companions suffer from? Statistics show that four out of five dogs will likely have dental or periodontal disease by the time they reach three years of age (1).

What’s even worse is that the lack of dental care can cause other health issues, ranging from diabetes to heart diseases. It starts with plaque, which causes the dog’s immune system to react and get inflamed.

“The more severe the dental disease and the more inflammation present, the more likely it is that bacteria may enter the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body.” - Dr. Chad Lothamer, DVM, DAVDC for PetMD

Oral hygiene is a must, but no dog likes us touching their teeth. That’s why you need to make tooth brushing as much of a tolerable experience as you can. The first step towards doing that is picking the appropriate toothbrush for your pooch. Here are some things to keep in mind when making the choice:

Types of Dog Toothbrush

There are three types of dog toothbrushes you can find on the market. The most common one is the standard toothbrush that looks pretty much like the one we use for brushing our teeth. The bristles, however, aren’t the same. Dogs’ teeth and gums are more sensitive than ours so the bristles are way softer. This type of dog toothbrush usually has an angled brush head, which helps you reach tricky areas inside the dog’s mouth.

The second popular type of dog toothbrush is the one that has dual or triple brush heads. These allow you to reach the teeth from all angles, which speeds up the whole tooth brushing process. That’s great for dogs who can’t stand having their teeth cleaned. These are great for medium and large dogs, while most models are too big for tiny pooches.

Finally, there are finger toothbrushes, which are easy to use. If your dog is intimidated by toothbrushing, these can be quite helpful. Finger brushes are made of silicone and are great for gum massaging. This makes them great for puppies, elderly dogs or those with gum diseases. On another hand, if there’s the slightest possibility of your dog giving you a little bite for sticking your finger inside the mouth, this type of toothbrush can be a risky choice. Plus, if your dog can’t stay still during toothbrushing, there’s a possibility the finger brush slips off your finger and into the dog’s mouth. What a recipe for a disaster.

The Size Of The Brush Head

Picking the toothbrush of an appropriate size is especially important when it comes to small dogs. The toothbrush is supposed to reach all the areas around the teeth, so if you own a tiny pooch, get a tiny brush. Likewise, use a large toothbrush for large dogs.

With that being said, 360-degree toothbrushes can work on both small and large pooches, since the bristles are always touching the teeth. Furthermore, there are double-ended toothbrushes that have both a smaller and a larger head.

The Bristles

As we previously mentioned, dogs’ toothbrushes are softer than the ones we use. The bristles have to be gentle not to hurt their gums, yet still hard enough to remove plaque and tartar. When buying a dog toothbrush for the first time, go for one on which bristles are softer than those on a baby toothbrush.

The Handle

If you opt for a finger brush, that means that sticking your hand inside your dog’s mouth isn’t an issue. For everyone else, there are dog toothbrushes with handles. One thing to keep in mind is the shorter the handle, the more control you have. Furthermore, ergonomic rubber handles are less likely to slip from your hand if your dog starts moving around.

The 8 Best Dog Toothbrush Options

There’s a lot of things to think about when choosing the toothbrush for your pooch. But we’ll make your job a bit easier. Here are our favourite dog toothbrushes you can find on the market.

#1: Best Overall: Vet's Best Dental Kit

Vet's Best Dental Kit
  • Allows simultaneous cleaning from all angles
  • Has a textured comfort grip handle
  • High-quality toothpaste included

Toothbrushes for dogs don’t usually look much different than ours. Most of them have long handles and heads with nylon bristles. Well, the toothbrush from this dental kit by Vet’s Best is not a typical toothbrush.

Even with a quick glimpse, it’s obvious how this toothbrush is different. It has three bristle heads that are designed to help you clean each tooth from all angles. This is handy, especially when trying to clean the teeth in the back. The bristles are medium density, which makes them ideal for adult dogs. However, keep in mind that it might not be gentle enough for elderly dogs and puppies. The dog toothpaste that comes with the kit contains enzymes and natural ingredients that help with removing plaque and tartar.

This brush will work well for adult pooches of all sizes. In fact, it’s designed to be used for both cats and dogs, thanks to the size of the bristle head. The handle is long and has a textured rubber that makes it comfortable to hold and won’t slip out of your hands in case your dog starts squirming around. Since it’s a “medium” brush, it might take some time for your dog to get used to it, but it will all be worth the trouble.

Petdentist Premium Pro Dog Toothbrush with Extra Soft Bamboo Charcoal
  • Round-ended tips are gentle enough for dogs of all ages
  • Bamboo charcoal deodorizes and sanitises the dog’s mouth
  • Natural whitening action

Charcoal is well-known for absorbing toxins, and it’s found in different hygiene products (3). Recently, regular charcoal has been replaced by bamboo charcoal, since it’s more porous and way stronger at absorbing than the regular one. Petdentist know the benefits of bamboo charcoal, and that’s why they made a toothbrush with bristles made of it.

Bamboo charcoal is 100% natural and safe for use on our pets. It absorbs toxins and stains from your pooch’s teeth and makes them white. It removes plaque and bacterias and anything else that can cause a dog’s bad breath. Bamboo charcoal is so strong it even prevents any bacteria buildup on the toothbrush itself. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash the toothbrush after every usage, but you can rest assured it will always be sterile and without odour.

The bristles are soft and have round ended tips, which makes this brush suitable for dogs of all ages. In fact, it can be used for other pets, like cats and ferrets. However, the product itself is not small. Therefore, if your pooch is tiny, you might have trouble reaching all the teeth.

Nylabone Advanced Oral Care Puppy Dental Kit
  • Bristles are soft enough for growing teeth
  • The toothbrush features rubber massagers
  • The kit also comes with Molasses-tasting toothpaste

When it comes to dog dental care, there’s no such thing as starting too early. Puppies start getting their adult teeth when they reach around 6 months of age, and as soon as they do, it’s time to introduce them to toothbrushing. If your pooch’s milk teeth are about to be replaced with adult ones, it’s time to get a puppy dental kit, such as this one from Nylabone.

For over half a century Nylabone has been making dog dental products that are used all over the world. This kit has everything you need to introduce your dog to dental hygiene. It includes a toothbrush, a finger brush and toothpaste. The toothbrush is angled for better reach and has soft nylon bristles that gently clean growing teeth. Some puppies can’t stand the thought of a strange “stick” being used inside their mouth, and in such cases, a finger brush can be a better way to introduce your pooch to toothbrushing. It’s made of rubber and allows you to reach all the tricky areas where tartar can build up. Finally, the toothpaste that comes with the kit contains Denta-C, which helps reduce plaque and killing bacteria. It’s safe for puppies older than 8 weeks and tastes like Molasses.

Emours 360-Degree Pet Toothbrush Dental Care Kit
  • Great for dogs who move around when their teeth are being cleaned
  • Comes with a storage case
  • Suitable for dogs of all sizes

Brushing your dog’s teeth can be quite tricky. Pooches don’t understand what we’re doing with that bristly thing in their mouth, so that’s not surprising. They might move around or chew the toothbrush, and you might end up getting only a few teeth clean per one tooth brushing session. However, the 360-Degree Pet Toothbrush from Emours could solve your problems.

As the name suggests, this toothbrush from Emours has a 360-degree bristle head. This means that the bristles go all around and even if your dog is wiggling and moving, the toothbrush will touch the teeth. The bristles are 1.2 cm long, which makes this toothbrush ideal for small dogs like Pomeranians and Yorkies. With that being said, you can also use it for large dogs, although a cleaning session will take a bit longer.

#5: Best Toothbrush Treat: WHIMZEES Toothbrush Star Dental Treat

WHIMZEES Toothbrush Star Dental Treat
  • Tasty and useful at the same time
  • Hypoallergenic and low fat
  • Dogs can use it themselves

Although important, dental hygiene can be monotonous. If only our dogs could brush their own teeth… Well, they love chewing stuff, so they actually could brush their teeth, although the toothbrush would probably get destroyed in the process. That’s a pity and a waste of money, unless the toothbrush is edible! And that’s exactly what this VOHC-approved toothbrush from Whimzees is (4).

This dental treat comes in the shape of a toothbrush. It has grooves and ridges that will get into those small spaces between the teeth and remove plaque and tartar. At the same time, it helps the blood flow through the gums. The handle is designed in such a way that allows the dog to hold it with the paws while chewing on it.

Let’s talk about the ingredients. The treat is vegetarian, grain-free and gluten-free, so it’s suitable even for dogs with gluten intolerance and food allergies. It’s low in fat but high in vitamins and antioxidants as well as fibres, which help with digestion. There are no artificial colours, ingredients or preservatives, and there are no GMOs or meat. It’s suitable for dogs over 9 months of age and 2.5 kilograms of weight.

#6: Best Dog Toothbrush Toy: Erichome Dog Toothbrush Chew Toy

Erichome Dog Toothbrush Chew Toy
  • The material is natural and eco-friendly
  • Can be used with or without the toothpaste
  • Stabilizing paw pads keep the toy in place

Teeth brushing is a tedious activity, and no matter how patient and obedient our dogs are, we can safely assume they don’t enjoy it. Still, it has to be done every day. To make this dull task a bit more appealing, we can buy the other stuff that helps with dental hygiene, like chew toys.

This toy from Erichome is made of 100% natural eco-friendly rubber. This material is non-toxic and really gentle to both teeth and gums. It features short bristles that go in different directions and are supposed to help your pooch get rid of all the food bits stuck between the teeth.

But that’s not all. There’s a hole at the top into which you’re supposed to squeeze the toothpaste. Then, the toothpaste will flow through seven holes on the toy. As dogs chew on the toy, they’re doing their dental hygiene routine at the same time, all without your aid. The toy has stabilizing pads that keep it steady on the floor while your pooch chews on it.

That all sounds nice and dandy, but what if your dog doesn’t want to use it? Well, Erichome offers full refunds in case there are any issues after receiving the product.

#7: Best For Small Dogs: TropiClean Fresh Breath Oral Care Kit

TropiClean Fresh Breath Oral Care Kit
  • A tiny toothbrush head allows you to reach back teeth
  • The toothbrush handle is ergonomic and comfortable in the hand
  • Suitable for puppies

Accessories for large dogs are usually hard to find. Dog beds, collars, leashes, jackets… However, some things that are designed for smaller dogs can work. For example, a smaller comb will get the job done, although in a longer period of time. The same goes for toothbrushes. On the other hand, dental hygiene accessories are harder to find for small dogs. Well, we thought so until we found this kit from TropiClean.

The kit comes with a regular toothbrush, a fingertip brush and a brushing gel. The TripleFlex toothbrush has bristles that are positioned in such a way to reach the teeth from all sides. Around the edges, there are rubber bristles that are supposed to gently massage the gums. The handle is ergonomic and comfortable and won’t slip out from your hand.

#8: Best Dog Finger Toothbrush: Harzara Professional Pet Finger Toothbrush

Harzara Professional Pet Finger Toothbrush
  • Safety ring prevents possible choking hazards
  • One size fits all
  • Storage bag included with the purchase

Fingertip toothbrushes are great, as they give you more control over toothbrushing. You can also get a better look at your dog’s teeth and see if there are any dental issues. Plus, these are generally really gentle and ideal for young pups who are about to experience their first tooth brushing. There are plenty of finger toothbrushes on the market, but not all of them are great. But with these from Harzara, you can’t go wrong.

This professional set from Harzara features six finger toothbrushes. They come with a practical drawstring bag, so you can keep them all clean and safe in one place. The finger hole on these toothbrushes is designed to fit anyone, unlike most other models. They also have a safety ring attached, that prevents the toothbrush from slipping off from your finger. This is great, as you don’t have to worry about scenarios like your dog swallowing one during dental hygiene sessions.

Toothbrushes are made of non-toxic silicone. The bristles are soft, short and dense, which allows you to remove plaque and tartar without hurting the gums. Toothbrushes are reusable, but it’s recommended you change them once a month.
