Who says dog beds can’t be stylish? Rattan dog beds are the perfect example of how pet furniture can sometimes work as home decor too. But are wicker dog beds a good idea? Are there any pitfalls one should be aware of before buying a fancy bed made of rattan?

These are the questions we’ll answer in this guide, along with the reviews of the best rattan dog beds available in Australia.

What to Look for When Choosing a Rattan Dog Bed

Rattan dog beds and similar wicker beds are one of the most elegant options when it comes to your canine companion’s sleeping arrangements. However, it’s important to find a bed that will be comfortable for your dog too, besides looking good. Here is what to consider when finding the perfect bed for your home and your dog:

Design

One of the main reasons people buy rattan dog beds is the look. Rattan furniture is a great way to introduce a timeless but refreshing look into your home. When shopping for a dog bed, there is no shame in looking for options that you like aesthetically. But when you find that rattan bed that will fit perfectly with your other furniture, make sure to consider whether it’s a good option for your dog too.

Durability

Durability is an important factor for any dog bed. Well, here is the thing: rattan is not the most durable material. Although rattan is a popular choice for outdoor furniture, it is not weather-proof. Both rain and direct sunlight will damage rattan over time [2]. When kept away from the elements, though, rattan beds can hold up quite well.

Related: Best Dog Beds Australia.

If you are looking for a rattan dog bed to use outdoors, natural, untreated rattan will only be a good choice if you keep the bed in the shade and there is not too much humidity where you live. If that’s not the case, there are still some options available, like beds made of rattan that’s been treated to make it weather-proof, or wicker beds made from synthetic rattan imitation.

Size and Shape

When choosing a bed for your dog, size and shape are very important factors if you want the dog to like the bed. Unfortunately, there is no specific formula we can give you for determining the right size, as it can all be quite personal.

“All dogs have their own preferred sleeping position, so it is important to make sure you find a dog bed that accommodates your dog’s preferences. Some dogs like to sleep tucked into a tiny ball, while others stretch out until they’re fully extended. So, the size of the dog doesn’t always correlate to the sleep style.” - Victoria Schade for PetMD [1]

Your dog’s sleeping preferences are something you’ll easily learn just by observing your furry friend. For example, dogs that like to stretch out might find those rattan dog beds with high walls on the sides a bit too restricting. However, some others might love the same feature due to the sense of security it provides.

The easiest way to find the size of dog bed you need is to simply take a tape measure and measure your dog while they are sleeping in their favourite position.

Comfort

Comfort is key if you want the best bed possible for your dog. Once you find the right size and shape, what’s left to consider is the pillow. Rattan pet beds usually come with some sort of pillow or mat. Some dog’s don't care much about the quality of the pillow, but some would enjoy having a thick foam mattress or perhaps some extra-warm bedding.

Weight Capacity

Rattan pet beds don’t usually have an official weight capacity. This is why it can be difficult to figure out if the bed is sturdy enough for your dog when shopping online. Typically, small dogs will be fine on almost any rattan bed. With larger and heavier dog’s, things are not that simple. If your dog is on the heavier side, look for beds that have a sturdy frame and a stable base - otherwise, the bed might not hold up to the weight of your dog.

Best Cane Dog Bed Australia 2022: Our Top Picks

#1: Best Overall: Bella Rattan Dog Bed

Bella Rattan Dog Bed
  • Made in Australia
  • Two sizes available
  • The cushion cover is breathable and hypoallergenic
  • Beautiful handmade design

This bed by Koko Collective has earned first place on our list for several reasons. It’s really hard, if not impossible, to find a rattan pet bed as stylish and functional as this one. Each of these beds is hand made with lots of attention, and the result is awesome.

What made us fall in love with the Bella is the intricate rattan pattern on the sides of the bed. The bed looks very delicate but is quite sturdy (although not indestructible). Owners of larger canines will be happy to learn that the Bella comes in two sizes, one of which is fairly large (90x55x41 cm). This means that even a Lab or a German Shepherd can enjoy the comfort of this bed. The smaller version measures 60x40x40 cm.

Another thing we loved about the Bella is that the sleeping surface is elevated slightly off the ground. This ensures better airflow and can also be helpful for dogs with arthritis and other joint issues. The height allows dogs to change positions from lying down to standing with ease, as they don’t have to raise or lower their bodies too much.

Finally, this bed comes with a comfy cushion included. The cushion comes wrapped in a double-sided cotton cover. The cover is removable, so you can throw it in the washing machine every time your pooch leaves a paw print on it. And in case you don’t want to take out the cushion and wash the cover every time it gets dirty, Koko Collective also sells bed sheets fitted specifically for this bed.

Trisha Yearwood Pet Collection Rattan Wicker Dog Bed
  • Minimalist design
  • Fairly large
  • Comfy cushion included
  • Very durable and easy to clean cushion cover

As a rule of thumb, rattan dog beds are extravagant pieces that easily become the centrepiece of every apartment. But if you’re into more minimalist design, then they might be too much. Luckily, there are models, like this one by Trisha Yearwood, that are simple but still very elegant.

This dog bed features a classic wicker weave made with Kubu rattan, which grows in the Indonesian forests of Borneo and Sumatra. It’s naturally grey, meaning this bed wasn’t painted in any way.

The best feature pm this dog bed has got to be the cushion. It’s made of thick foam that will keep your pooch comfortable during nap time. There are three colours to choose from, black, cream and grey, so you can go with the one that matches your interior the best.

The cushion features a removable cover made of polypropylene. This is a strong, fade-resistant fabric, which makes it ideal for dog beds. It’s fluffy and warm, so you can rest assured your pooch will sleep like a baby. And in the case the bed gets dirty (which will eventually happen), you can simply remove the cover and throw it in the washing machine. In case of hard stains, you can even use bleach without worrying you’ll damage the fabric.

Approved by furry babies!
"This bed is one of the best ones I’ve bought. It’s super sturdy and it looks good in any room. Pillow cover unzips so that you can wash it, I’ve washed it a few times and still looks good, hasn’t lost its fluff. It was meant to be for mummy but the babies took over and they like to chew on the sides but I haven’t noticed any damage."

The Mila - Rattan Basket Bed for Dog
  • Stylish design
  • Raised cushion rim offers support for neck and head
  • Tall rim gives the dog a sense of security
  • Tie closures keep the cushion in place

When choosing the right dog bed, your main focus is on your pooch’s comfort. But let’s be real, we all want it to look good and well-blended with the interior design of our homes. What’s amazing about this bed by Olivia + Jax is that it complements well different styles, be it boho, eclectic or even mid-century modern.

The frame of this bed features a beautiful teardrop pattern and amazing details made with thin strips of rattan. The frame is tall enough to keep the cushion in place when your pooch tosses and turns during nap time. To further secure it in place, the cushion features tie closures on each side. This is especially handy if your dog likes to dig and move bedding around before laying down.

And speaking of the cushion, it’s made with bolsters on all sides that fit into the bed perfectly. This creates a comfy and tucked-in atmosphere for your dog. The cushion looks and feels great too, partly thanks to the cover made from a linen-cotton blend. This means it’s not only soft and comfy but also built to last. This fabric is hypoallergenic, breathable and, most importantly, easy to clean. If dirty paw prints appear on the light-coloured cushion, a quick wash will remove them without hassle.

#4: Best For Outdoors: Maharaja Rattan Pet Day Bed

Maharaja Rattan Pet Day Bed
  • Can be used both indoors and outdoors
  • Elevated from the ground
  • Suitable for dogs up to 36 kg
  • Water-resistant and machine-washable cushion cover

If you’re looking for a majestic rattan dog bed that’s worthy of a king or a queen your pooch is, then you’ll surely like this model by Iconic Pet. It’s shaped like a couch, but to us, it looks more like a throne.

This dog bed has a strong frame made of powder-coated steel, so you can rest assured it will stand the test of time. In fact, you probably won’t have to buy your dog another bed ever again. The bed frame is wrapped with pliable rattan palm stems, which gives it that elegant, noble look.

What makes this dog bed suitable for both indoors and outdoors is not just its corrosion-proof frame. Each string of rattan is coated with UV inhibitors. These layers minimize rusting and flaking that usually occur after long exposure to weather elements.

The bed also features a cushion filled with foam. It’s so soft, your pooch will feel like sleeping on clouds. The cushion comes with a grey cover that is water-resistant. This means you don’t have to go bringing the cushion inside every time it starts drizzling a bit. And when the bed gets dirty, you can easily remove the cushion cover and wash it in the machine.

FAQ

Are there any downsides to rattan dog beds?

Rattan dog beds are stylish and cool, but they do have some minor downsides. First of all, rattan might not be that durable if conditions are not perfect. For example, if exposed to too much moisture or sunlight and heat it will degrade over time. But that’s what you get with natural materials. These beds also might not be the best for heavier dogs as they are not as sturdy and stable as some other options.

How should I clean and care for my rattan dog bed?

Rattan beds generally don’t require any special care. As mentioned, you should keep the bed dry. If the rattan part gets dirty, you can simply wipe the dirt off with a damp towel and some soap or mild detergent if necessary. The covers on any mats and pillows in the bed as well as any bedding you might be using should be washed regularly, preferably using a hot cycle in your washing machine [3].

Are wicker and rattan the same?

A wicker bed and a rattan bed could be the same thing, but not necessarily. Rattan refers to the material the plant is made from (the rattan plant in this case). ‘Wicker’ actually refers to the way the furniture is made by weaving together pieces of rattan or any other material.

Best Waterproof Dog Bed (2022 Buyers Guide)

The Best Waterproof Dog Beds In Australia - A Review

Our #1 Pick

Labrador in a barney dog bed

The Best Overall

The Barney Bed

  • Multiple sizes available
  • 1000's of 5 star reviews
  • Top-quality, high-density memory foam
  • Easy to clean with removable lining

So, your dog wet the bed. It’s a pretty normal occurrence in the lifetime of your pup. Or the lifetime of any human for that matter! In puppyhood, the early accidents of toilet training inevitably lead to soggy bedding from time to time.

Then when you get to the twilight years like my dogs are, incontinence could be a sign of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CCDS), or as it’s more commonly known, doggy dementia. (1)

Perhaps you’re looking for a waterproof dog bed because you want to have an outdoor option if you go camping often.

Whatever your reasoning for needing a waterproof dog bed, this is the guide for you.

What To Look For In A Waterproof Dog Bed

Waterproof or Water-Resistant?

It’s interesting how many companies will label their dog beds as water-resistant. It often signals to the buyer that the bed can withstand water right? Well, I’ve made that mistake too. It’s one of those fancy buzzwords that trick you into believing it’s waterproof when it’s technically not.

Water-resistance means it’ll withstand a light spray of water. It probably won’t hold up against a large spill or accident.

In some cases, you might not need more than that. It depends on the situation you’re using the dog bed for.

For example, if you’re looking for a bed to go camping with, the base needs to be waterproof. The top of the bed may not be. Perhaps water resistance is good enough in that case.

However, for incontinent puppies and senior dogs, a completely waterproof solution is probably best.

Indoors or Outdoors?

Where will you be using this bed the most? The properties of the bed change depending on the circumstances.

Most waterproof dog beds are indeed marketed to be both indoor and outdoor solutions for dogs. For the most part, that is true.

However, it’s worth figuring out the primary location that you’ll be using this bed. It will affect your buying choices. For example, severely materials are used when creating waterproof dog beds. Not all of them are as comfortable as the others. An Oxford fabric covering is amazing for indoor and outdoor because it’s completely impenetrable. It’s not quite as comfortable as some of the finer waterproof linings you can see on other dog beds.

Likewise, you may steer away from the softer materials for outdoor use. They’ll probably get dirtier quicker at the base.

Non-Slip Bottom

If a bed may get wet often, it helps to have a non-slip bottom. You’ve seen these before. It’s typically a black base with small rubber pads or nobs to prevent the bed from sliding around when wet.

This is a safety precaution for your dog. Most waterproof dog beds should have them - particularly if they’re being used outdoors.

Ease of Cleaning

Particularly with incontinent pups in mind, you’ll want to refresh your dog’s bed as often as possible. Waterproof beds in general are relatively easy to clean by nature. However, they can be even easier to clean if they’re machine washable. Not all of them are.

Some waterproof mats can be thrown in the washing machine as they are. For beds, you can slip off the exterior lining for washing. Some beds even have the capability to have the interior filling washed too. This is a great feature with incontinent dogs in mind. Even if pee or poop can’t penetrate the inner filling, sometimes odours do. It can be helpful to wash the cushions or mattress every now and again to keep it as fresh as possible.

Size

What size should your dog’s bed be? There are two ways to look at this. Most manufacturers will give guideline for the beds they create. They’ll indicate the best size for small, medium and large dogs etc. However, it’s still worth doing some measuring to get the most comfortable sized bed for your dog.

In honesty, the size of your dog’s bed has more to do with their sleep position than their overall size.

"If you watch your dog sleep you'll notice they get into lots of different positions: stretched out, curled up, on their back - even on their belly with their legs stretched in opposite directions like Superman!”- RSPCA (2)

It’s best to measure your dog as they are resting to get a better picture of how they’ll use the bed. You may find that you’ll need a larger bed than you first thought. If in doubt, it’s always best to have a larger bed than a smaller one.

Most dogs can get comfortable on a large bed. Few can get comfortable on a small one.

Best Waterproof Dog Beds Australia 2022

Now you know what to look out for, let’s dive into our top recommendations for waterproof dog beds in Australia.

The Barney Bed with Waterproof Lining

What sets this product apart from the rest?

  • Multiple sizes available
  • 1000's of 5 star reviews
  • Top-quality, high-density memory foam
  • Easy to clean with removable lining

The Barney bed is our favourite dog bed of all time on the Australian market. It’s pretty hard to rival such a stellar product that provides comfort and luxury to all dogs of every size.

Speaking of sizing, the impressive size range is one reason we love it so much. The Barney bed comes in five sizes that suit breeds of all kinds. The smallest size is 73cm x 58cm overall, with  50cm x 34cm of interior sleeping space.  This is a decent size for a puppy or small breed. The largest size is colossal. It’s called the Epic Barney bed and measures 200cm x 130cm overall, with 160cm x 90cm of sleeping space. This is ideal for giant breeds or multi-dog households.

It also suits every sleeping style because of the way the beds are structured. With a raised outer rim, your dog can comfortably rest their head as they sleep without any neck strain. All five sizes support dogs that like to curl up into a ball as they sleep or sprawl out like a starfish. I have both kinds of sleepers at home!

The orthopedic, high-density memory foam makes this one of the most comfortable dog beds we’ve encountered in all our reviews of dog beds. It’s supportive of elderly joints ad well as young growing bones. The high-quality foam won’t lose shape either so you can trust you won’t need to replace the bed any time soon.

So how is it waterproof? Well, the bed comes with a water-resistant microfibre lining. If you want a fully waterproof Barney Bed experience, you’ll need to purchase the additional waterproof protection lining kit.

It comes with a soft towel layer that is absorbent and comfortable. On top of that, you slip on the polyurethane lining for complete waterproofing. This is perfect for puppies who are toilet training or incontinent dogs.

The Barney Bed is not cheap by any means. But if you’re willing to spend for premium quality materials and a level of comfort your dog has never experienced before, this is the choice for you!

The Barney Bed is suitable for small dogs like a Chihuahua to large dogs like a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

#2: Budget-friendly Option: BREINZ Heavy Duty Dog Bed

BREINZ Heavy Duty Dog Bed
  • Good value for money
  • Fully waterproof materials
  • Easy to wash
  • Segmented cushion bed retains its shape

The Barney Bed is lovely but may be a little pricey for some. If that’s the case for you, the BREINZ waterproof dog bed is a good alternative that won’t break the bank.

The outer lining is made of tough 600D denier Oxford nylon canvas. This is what many raincoats are made of. It’s ideal for outdoor use and incontinence because it’s completely impenetrable. However, the outer lining isn’t quite as flexible as some of the others on this list.

The interior is stuffed with poly-cotton. This gives the bed the cushion it needs to be a comfortable sleeping spot for your pup. It’s a segmented cushion that helps the bed retain its shape over time. No matter what position your dog sleeps in, they’ll get adequate cushioning and support from all angles.

The lining is removable making it simple to wash. You can wash in interior cushions too.

The downside here is the sizing. Unlike the huge range you get with our top choice, BREINZ only has this bed in three sizes. The smallest is 60 x 48cm. The medium is 100 x 80cm. The largest is 100 x 120cm. Most dog breeds will be able to fit comfortably here. But notably, these beds may not be suitable for multi-dog households or extra-large dog breeds.

There’s only one design too, which is black canvas with white trim. It’s quite a neat look but perhaps not suited for everyone.

Overall, these beds are impenetrably waterproof and very well priced!

#3: Most Portable: Kurgo Waterproof Dog Bed

Kurgo Waterproof Dog Bed
  • Good for campers
  • Waterproof base
  • Comfortable inner lining
  • Portable design

If you’re searching for a portable waterproof dog bed, the Kurgo model is ideal.

This lightweight dog mat was made for those who love camping and travelling with their dogs. No matter how wet the environment is, your dog is safe, comfortable, and dry with this water-resistant bed.

It even rolls up into a bag with a portable handle for easy storage and carrying. You can take this with you everywhere.

Kurgo Waterproof Dog Bed being tested by our review team.

The con here is regarding how waterproof the materials are. Because this is built for outdoor use, we don’t recommend this for incontinent dogs. The materials are very high quality. The bottom is lined with completely waterproof Rufftex. But the top has a microtomic ripstop material lining that is only water-resistant. Therefore, it’s not ideal for dogs who have accidents at night, or puppies who are not yet toilet trained.

Instead, this is the perfect travel companion for woodland, beach or outback camping.
