Best Dog Beds Australia (2020 Buyers Guide)

The Best Dog Beds Available In Australia - The Ultimate Review

Sleeping is such a big part of a dog’s day. On average, they sleep anywhere from 12 to 16 hours per day and puppies tend to sleep even longer (1)! If they’re tired, dogs will sleep anywhere, but for a good night’s sleep they need a quality bed. Our best dog beds Australia top list is dedicated to helping you find the perfect bed for your canine friend to sleep on!

How to Choose A Dog Bed?

When it comes to dog beds, you have quite a few options to choose from. Dog beds come in all shapes and sizes, and which one fits best will depend on the individual needs of your dog. However, in order to choose right, you need to know what your options are. These are the 3 main types of dog beds available:

Classic Dog Beds

“Classic” dog beds come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of those look just like a simple mat, some of them have bolsters to provide extra support, some are extra thick and cozy... If your dog is healthy, you can choose whatever shape you think will fit your pooch’s favorite sleeping positions the best. If a washable dog bed is what you are looking for, it’s possible to find beds that you can just throw in the washing machine. However, most of them come with removable covers that can be washed, which is probably the better option as the cover only is easier to dry, but washing the cover gives you basically the same effect as washing the whole bed.

Orthopedic Dog Beds

Orthopedic dog beds are great for dogs just like they are for humans. They provide extra support for your pooch’s body when sleeping thanks to the memory foam mattresses for these beds are made of. If your dog is healthy, you can get an orthopedic dog bed to provide them with the ultimate comfort.

On the other hand, if your dog is experiencing issues that cause pain in the joints and bones, an orthopedic bed is a must. Osteoarthritis, for example, “is a common problem in dogs, particularly in seniors and large breeds. Although there is no cure for this progressive condition, identifying the problem early and initiating appropriate management can help keep your dog active and improve quality of life”, says Elizabeth Racine for AKC. An important part of managing such conditions is a proper bed, so choosing an orthopedic dog bed with a quality memory foam mattress is the best you can do.

Raised Dog Beds

Unlike standard dog beds, raised dog beds are designed in a way that resembles a cot-style bed for humans. These beds usually have a metal frame over which a piece of strong fabric is stretched to create a sleeping surface. Although they might not look so comfortable, these beds can actually work great and many dogs seem to love them. Raised beds are perfect for outdoor use since they are weather-resistant and there is much less cleaning involved in maintaining this type of bed. Raised beds are also great for warm climates as they allow for more air circulation thus keeping the temperature down while your pooch is sleeping.

Dog Cave Beds

Cave beds are just what the name suggests - beds that look like tiny caves. This type of bed is designed to respond to the burrowing instinct some dogs seem to have. If your dog likes to dig around the bed, getting a cave bed might have. Cave beds can also be great for anxious dogs, as the closed-up feeling makes them feel more secure.

Best Dog Beds in 2020 Reviewed

As you have seen, there are many types of beds you can choose from, and which one you choose will ultimately depend on what you think your pooch may like. In any case, one of these suggestions should definitely fit your requirements.

PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed & Lounge

So why is this bed from PetFusion so good? Let’s start with the most important part of the bed: the mattress. This bed features a 4-inch thick memory foam mattress that provides optimal support and comfort while sleeping.

On top of that, this bed also features bolsters on all sides that are generously filled with polyfill. The polyester filling is made with recycled polyester, which makes this bed more eco-friendly than some other options.

Finally, the outside cover on this bed is also top-notch. It’s made with a mix of cotton and polyester - a combo that results in fabric that’s pleasant to touch and breathable while also being water-resistant and tear-resistant. The cover can be washed in the washing machine and tumble-dried too (on a gentle setting). There is even a waterproof liner underneath the cover to prevent any liquids that might get on the bed from reaching your floor.

Best Friends by Sheri Faux Fur Donut Cuddler
  • Faux-fur provides warmth and comfort
  • Pet-safe material and water-resistant lining
  • Safe in the washer and dryer
  • Good value for money

This bed from Best Friends by Sheri is proof that cheap dog beds don’t always have to be low-quality. And this bed looks so comfy that if they made one in a human size, all pet owners would have a matching bed with their pooches. Unfortunately that’s not the case, but these beds do come in several sizes which makes them a great choice for dogs weighing from 25 to 150 pounds.

The donut shape is great for all those pooches who love to curl up when sleeping. The trim is raised a bit, which allows the dog to rest his head and release the tension in his neck. The bed is covered with faux shag fur, and manufacturers claim that this self-warming material is supposed to resemble a mother’s fur coat. This is especially great for adjusting a newcomer puppy to the new environment.

This bed is safe to wash in a washing machine on a gentle cycle. You can also tumble dry it on low heat. In fact, it’s actually recommendable to be dried in a dryer to avoid matting of the fur.

The bed comes in two natural colors, frost and taupe, which are sure to suit any interior. Underneath the faux fur, there’s water-resistant nylon which serves as the first line of defense against potty accidents.

#3: Best Orthopedic Dog Bed: BarkBox Orthopedic 2-in-1 Bolster Dog Bed

BarkBox Orthopedic 2-in-1 Bolster Dog Bed
  • Versatile
  • Clever design
  • Durable
  • Quality memory foam base

While there are many orthopedic dog beds available on the market, some of them are definitely better than others - and the BarkBox 2-in-1 bed is definitely one of the best options available.

While some orthopedic dog mattresses feature low-quality memory foam, this is definitely not the case with this bed. The memory foam mattress on this bed is made with two different layers to provide the ultimate balance between firmness and comfort. The bottom part is made of super-dense memory foam which ensures the bed can never get compressed too much. Big Barker 7 Pillow Top Orthopedic Dog Bed
  • Stylish, comfortable, and durable cover
  • Extra thick memory foam mattress for optimal support
  • Made in USA
  • Easy to clean

This bed from Big Barker is one of the largest dog beds we have found. The “extra large” version is 52 inches long and 36 inches wide which is really huge. If you want something larger than that - you might as well get a human bed. But, you probably won’t need it, since most dogs can easily fit into this bed.

When it comes to large dogs, the size of the bed is not the only troubling issue. Namely, dog beds are often made quite thin which is fine for smaller dogs. However, large dogs are usually quite heavy too which means they need a bed that is thick and provides proper support - and that’s exactly what the Big Barker does.

The memory foam mattress inside this bed is 7 inches thick, and Big Barker even offers a warranty that guarantees the bed won’t change its shape for at least 10 years.

In addition to that, this bed also features a stylish and well-made removable cover. The cover is made of microfiber and has a really luxurious look and feel to it. It’s quite durable too, and it can be washed in the washing machine. If you are looking for a large dog bed available in Australia, this is a good choice.

FAQ

How big should my dog’s bed be?

The easiest way to find out exactly how big a bed you need is to measure your dog while sleeping. Take some time and measure your pooch in all of the favorite sleeping positions and get a bed based on that. Otherwise, you can also approximately guess the size of a bed according to the breed of your dog.

How should a dog bed be cleaned?

Depending on the type of coat your dog has, you might need to vacuum or air the bed outside every once in a while to get rid of the hairs. However, for optimal hygiene, you’ll also need to wash the bed (and any bedding or pillows your dog might use) weekly or at least once in a fortnight (3). Most beds on our list have removable covers that make cleaning easy - just throw the cover in the washing machine.

Why do dogs dig in bed?

If your dog does this, you definitely know what we are talking about. Many dogs like to “dig” around their bed in a circular motion. This is actually an old instinct from the time when dogs lived in the wild and made their beds from leaves and dirt. By digging around, they ensured they left their scent everywhere and made the bed more comfy. Digging around the bed can also be a sign of anxiety, not to mention that it can destroy the bed quite quickly. Adding a blanket to the bed or getting a cave bed usually solves the issues (4).

Do I need an orthopedic bed for my dog?

No, healthy dogs don’t really need orthopedic beds, but it definitely won’t hurt your dog. If your dog has issues with achy joints, arthritis, or hip dysplasia, though, using an orthopedic dog bed with memory foam is highly recommended.

Best Orthopedic Dog Bed Australia (2020 Buyers Guide)

The Best Orthopedic Dog Beds Available In Australia

We all know that for humans, having a proper comfortable bed can make a world of difference at how we feel during the day. Why should it be any different for dogs? Well, it isn’t. Our pets definitely deserve to get the most of their night’s sleep. That’s why this guide is dedicated to finding the best orthopedic dog bed that are available within Australia.

Why Get An Orthopedic Dog Bed?

One thing is certain: all dogs love their sleeping time. “On average, most dogs spend about 50% of their day sleeping, about 12 hours in a 24-hour period. Puppies, large-breed dogs, and older dogs may sleep more, while small-breed dogs and working dogs may sleep less”, says Sandra Mitchell for PetMD (1). Not only this, but dogs also spend a significant part of their day just lounging around if they don’t have anything else to do.

From this, it should be clear: dogs really do need the best dog bed available. But what is the best bed for a dog? Well, it is a bit of a personal question, but any dog can definitely benefit from sleeping on an orthopedic mattress.

Orthopedic dog beds, sometimes also called posturepedic dog beds, contain mattresses just like those made for humans. They use one of a couple of types of memory foam available, to provide optimal support to your dog’s body while sleeping.

The memory foam gets soft on pressure points, thus making your dog more comfortable and helping relieve any pain or soreness in the bones and joints. Although these beds are comfortable for any dog, they are especially helpful for older dogs, dogs dealing with issues like hip dysplasia and arthritis, and dogs recovering from surgery.

This orthopedic dog bed from BarkBox is definitely one of the best beds for dogs available within Australia. The first thing we liked about this bed is the clever design. This way, you can use just the base when you want to place the bed into a crate, and you can use the bolsters to create a comfortable den for your pooch outside the crate.

The second great thing about this bed is the memory foam mattress. This one features two layers. The base layer is made of high-density memory foam that provides plenty of support. A thinner layer on top is made with gel memory foam and helps regulate the temperature better. In short, everything your dog needs for a comfortable night!

Big Barker 7 Pillow Top Orthopedic Dog Bed
  • Extremely effective
  • Huge loyal customer base
  • Excellent quality materials
  • Several sizes available
  • Can eliminate up to 90% of dog fur

When it comes to large and giant breeds, it can be hard to find an orthopedic bed that is actually supportive enough. Large dogs can get quite heavy too, and most memory foam mattresses for dogs are simply not designed to support that much weight. The problem becomes even worse if your pet is actually dealing with health issues like arthritis and hip dysplasia (which is more common among giant breeds too).

This bed from Big Barker solves this issue by using a 7-inch thick layer of quality memory foam. The bed really looks and feels just like a therapeutic mattress made for humans. In addition to this, there is also a raised headrest which many dogs enjoy using.

The Big Barker bed is covered with a durable microfiber cover. The material is soft but durable, and can be washed in the washing machine too. This bed is available in different sizes, with the largest one being 48 inches long and 30 inches wide which should be enough for almost any dog.

In short the Big Barker bed is really a star among large orthopedic dog beds that are available in Austrlia. The only downside - the price tag, which is quite hefty. However, this bed is more durable than most other dog beds and even comes with a 10-year warranty that guarantees the memory foam base will not change its shape.

This bed from Kopeks is the best we could find in Australia for hip dysplasia because it provides optimal support thanks to a 7-inch thick premium memory foam mattress. We chose this mattress, in particular, because we know hip dysplasia often affects large dogs (3).

The largest version of this bed is 50 inches long and 34 inches wide, which should be big enough for even the largest of pets. Of course, the bed also comes in smaller sizes if you don’t want it so large.

In addition to the durable supportive mattress, this bed also features a headrest that is raised 3 additional inches above the sleeping surface.

The Kopeks bed also comes with a well-made removable cover. The cover features an internal waterproof layer with soft suede on the outside. The bottom is lined with grip fabric that prevents slipping.

FAQ

What size bed should I get for my dog?

When getting an orthopedic bed for your dog, the sizing is basically the same as with any other type of bed. You can probably get the right size simply by guessing, but the only surefire way to know the right size is by measuring your dog. For best results, measure your dog in all of his or her favorite sleeping positions and choose the size accordingly.

How thick should an orthopedic dog bed be?

There is no rule set in stone that says how thick an orthopedic mattress for dogs should be. If your pet is a small or tiny dog, you pretty much have nothing to worry about. Standard memory foam mattresses for dogs are usually 3-4 inches thick, and this will definitely be enough for a dog that is not too heavy. However, for large and giant breeds, it is better to choose a 7-inch thick mattress.

When and how should I clean my dog’s bed?

Just like ours, the dog’s bedding should be washed on a regular basis. Even though the bed might not be visibly dirty, it can still become a breeding ground for various microorganisms. For this reason, getting a bet with a removable cover that you can wash in the washing machine is always a good idea - and all of the beds on our list have this feature. To be safe, remove the cover and wash it every couple of weeks (4).
