The Best Indestructible Dog Bed - 6 Tough Chew Proof Options

Our #1 Pick

Luxury Dog Bed by Ambient Lounge

The Best Overall

Ambient Lounge Dog Bed

  • Waterproof base
  • Removable, machine-washable soft cover
  • 99% chew-proof
  • Suitable for dogs of all sizes

So, you're looking for the ultimate dog bed, but your pooch is a chewer! It happens to the best of us.

Maybe your puppy is just going through their teething phase as they explore the world. Perhaps your dog is exhibiting more destructive chewing behaviours that you’re trying to solve (1). Whatever the case may be, the unfortunate victim of their wrath is often the common dog bed. If you’re reading this, we wouldn’t be surprised if they have already torn their first dog beds to shreds.

Fear not! We have gathered and reviewed the very best chew proof dog beds Australia has to offer. We’ll explore what makes a great indestructible dog bed and give some waterproof dog bed options too in our buying guide. Hopefully, this guide will help you find the right solution for your little troublemaker.

Considerations whilst searching for a chew-proof dog bed

What are the key materials?

For the ultimate indestructible dog bed, you need materials that will last your dog through the ages.

Ideally, this bed will see your dog past their chewing phase and into the future. Polyester coverings with cheap stitching are not likely to last long. Hardier materials such as polyethylene plastics, waterproof nylon, rubber, and steel are much more likely to withstand wear and tear over time. Taut woven fabrics and strong velvet can work as well.

How fun is the bed to chew?

This may seem like an odd thing to consider but think about it. How appealing would it be for you to gnaw on a steel metal frame, as opposed to a soft, spongey foam?

Taste deterrents are used frequently to stop dogs chewing destructively. (2) The same principles can be applied to the comfort of chewing an object.

The materials used in the lining and exterior can be enticing to chew. Generally, the softer the bed, the more likely your pup will try to dig their teeth in. Orthopedic dog beds with memory foam mattresses are not ideal for this reason.

Now, that is not to say that only hard beds are suitable for chewing dogs. You’ll see in the later reviews that we have soft options there too. Some soft dog beds have robust stitching or a waterproof exterior protecting the uber-cosy “mattress” that lies underneath. This can ensure that even if your dog does try to destroy their bed, they don’t damage the integrity of it.

Would it be suitable for indoor and outdoor use?

Of course, this entirely depends on the main function of the dog bed you are looking for. If you just want a soft place for your dog to lay their head whilst at home, then water-resistant properties are not so important. If you are a camping family and need a more versatile bed, it is worth searching for a waterproof dog bed too.

PRO TIP: Raised dog beds are often made of waterproof (or at least water-resistant) materials that are also light enough to transport when you need to. These are ideal for portability and comfort both indoors and outdoors.

The Best Indestructible Dog Beds In 2020 Reviewed

When searching for a dog bed or a puppy bed for your chew-happy pooch, you have many options available to you. There are even soft beds that are durable enough to stand up to their destructive habit. Here is a round-up of the best indestructible dog beds on the Australian market.

#1: Best Overall: Ambient Lounge Dog Bed

Luxury Dog Bed by Ambient Lounge
  • Waterproof base
  • Removable, machine-washable soft cover
  • 99% chew-proof
  • Suitable for dogs of all sizes

The Ambient Lounge’s is a Luxury Dog Bed and is an outstanding choice for many reasons. It combines both plush comfort with chew proof technology to be the smart choice for owners with chewing dogs.

The manufacturer claims that this bed is 99% chew-proof due to the interwoven nylon base that even the strongest bite couldn’t penetrate. We didn’t choose this as our Best Overall unchewable dog bed solely because of this though. The Ambient Lounge bed has many features we can highlight.

For dogs who sleep in a circle, this bed is perfect due to its characteristic rounded shape. The plush faux fur cover is removable, machine-washable, and cosy. The waterproof fabric on its base makes this bed suitable for indoor and outdoor use. We also love how easy it is to clean with soapy water.

This bed comes in a wide variety of sizes, from small to XXL. All giant breed dog owners know how hard it is to find the best large dog bed options, however Ambient's Extra Large Bed can reportedly suit huge dog breeds like St Bernards and Newfoundlands.

The major drawback of this choice is the cost. It is a luxurious dog bed after all. This option is not great for those on a budget; it is a clear investment. Therefore, we wouldn’t recommend it for puppies that will inevitably outgrow it. Making this kind of investment presumes you’ll be keeping this bed for a long time. That said, the price tag correlates to its supreme quality and high ratings. It is our top choice for a super-comfy, durable dog bed for your Fido.

#2: Most Indestructible Dog Bed: Snooza Flea Free Dog Bed

Snooza Flea Free Dog Bed
  • Steel frame
  • Strong woven, breathable fabric
  • Well priced
  • Flat packs for portability

Raised dog beds are in general thought to be one of the most durable dog bed types given their typical makeup. A strong, mesh, or trampoline-like fabric is stretched over a metal frame to create an elevated sleeping platform. Whilst they may not look the comfiest, these strong dog beds are very pleasant for double-coated breeds who appreciate the extra ventilation, and elderly/disabled dogs with tender joints. The raised platform relieves pressure from the joints making for a more comfortable sleep overall.

The Snooza elevated dog bed is a simple raised model but also one of the most indestructible dog beds sold in Australia. We can say this for two reasons.

Firstly, the woven mesh sleeping platform is built to be tough for teeth and insects alike to sink into.

Secondly, there could not be a more uncomfortable chewing experience. Steel frame and synthetic, stretched fabric sound appetising to you? Even the most rambunctious of puppies won’t have fun trying to chomp on this!

Though this is a rather simple bed, another great feature is its portability. The frame completely flat packs and is surprisingly light - ideal for travelling. It is a breeze to clean with a simple wipe down and air dry.

PRO TIP: Consider using a cooling dog mat if you're wanting to keep your pooch cool.

The con would be that there is no canopy attachment to make this bed waterproof. As a basic bed that is unperishable, however, the Snooza is a stellar solution for you.

Rosewood 40 Winks Jumbo Cord Plush Dog Bed
  • Chew-proof fleece
  • Water-resistant
  • Cool design
  • Machine washable
  • Low priced

The Rosewood Plush Dog Bed may seem like the ultimate appealing feast to naughty, chewing dogs but it is surprisingly tough. The manufacturer claims that the cord fleecing is chew-resistant and water-resistant which makes this little bed very hardy indeed.

Another huge plus is the cost. We mentioned this bed as a great cheap dog bed too because of the quality you get for the price. The plush material is luxurious. The grey cord design is stylish. It doesn’t look or feel cheap at all. The perfect fashionable addition to your home that both you and your pooch will adore.

The con is that this bed only comes in one size that is suitable for small dogs. At just 50cm in width, it is a very limited size. Therefore puppies of larger breeds will likely outgrow it too.

Luckily the low-cost of this bed means it is completely worthwhile as an unchewable dog bed whilst your puppy is teething. Once they have outgrown that stage, you can upgrade to a bed that will suit their adult size. For toy dogs, this is a bed that can last them through infancy to adulthood comfortably.

Most Versatile Durable Dog Bed - K&H Pet Products Original Pet Cot
  • Durable
  • Weather-resistant canopy
  • Easy to clean
  • Strong metal frame
  • Tough mesh fabric

The K&H elevated dog bed is our pick for most versatile dog bed in this category. Its construction is completely unappealing as a potential chewing post too, so your dog or puppy will likely avoid trying to destroy it.

As far as raised dog beds go, this is an all-rounder. Coming in three sizes, the manufacturer boasts that the largest size can hold a dog of up to 55kg, so most breeds will get on with this bed. With a tight woven surface fabric and strong metal frame, it is built for long-lasting comfort.

The canopy is water-resistant, shielding your pup from UV rays and light rain alike. It isn’t totally waterproof however, so heavy rain and wind will seep through.

The K&H bed is extremely easy to clean and maintain. A simple scrub with soapy water will have it sparkling. The frame is also surprisingly light which makes it a portable option too for those of you who travel with your dogs.

As a long-lasting, strong dog bed, the K&H is versatile and mobile. A top choice all round.

#5: Best Indestructible Cave Bed: Enerhu Pet Nest

Enerhu Pet Nest
  • Chew-proof fabric
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Cool design
  • Low priced

For cave dwellers, the Enerhu Pet Nest is the perfect choice.

Don’t let looks deceive you! Though this bed is soft and snuggly, Enerhu has built this cave dog bed to stand the test of time and teeth. The tight stitch cotton velvet is reportedly chew-proof and breathable whilst being extremely comfortable for your pup.

This bed is cost effective, highly portable and very stylish with its floppy ear design.

Unfortunately this bed is not suitable for all breeds as the sizes are very small. The smallest is just 30cm and the largest is 48cm. This means that only puppies, toy dogs and some small dogs could use this cave bed to rest their heads. Another con is that this bed doesn’t appear to be machine washable like some others on this list, so you’ll need to wash it by hand in order to retain its distinctive cave-like shape.

That said, if you have a mischievous chewing puppy who likes that cave life, the Enerhu is a great unchewable dog bed that won’t break the bank.

#6: Best Chew-Proof Crate Mat: MIXJOY Dog Bed Crate Mat

MIXJOY Dog Bed Crate Mat
  • Chew-proof fabric
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Machine washable
  • Low priced

As far as puppy crates go, generally you want the cheapest blankets or mats because your puppy will likely destroy anything you put in there. But not the MIXJOY crate mat! This super economical and durable dog bed is ideal for crate training purposes.

This tough mat owes its unperishability to its tight stitching and high-woven fabric. Little teeth will have a difficult time tearing the fabric open to get to the cotton filling. It may be fun for your pup to gnaw on but they won’t break the surface which is what matters most.

The thick, cotton padding is able to take a beating too, meaning that the mat won’t lose shape no matter how much your four-legged friend tumbles, rolls and throws it around.

This crate mat comes in 3 different sizes ranging from 76cm to 100cm, making this bed suit many breeds. If you find that your dog loves the supreme comfort and quality of this bed, then you could upgrade in size to use as a floor cushion.

An added bonus is its machine-washability making it easy to clean should your puppy have any accidents in their crate. Though it is inexpensive, the MIXJOY mat has stellar reviews for its deluxe softness and long-lasting properties. Thumbs up from us.

The Final Verdict: The Best Durable Dog Bed in Australia

For a bed that would require Super-dog strength to destroy, the Snooza Dog Bed is a clear winner. The steel frame and impenetrable sleeping surface are sturdy, long-lasting, and uncomfortable to chew. If you have the cash, however, the  Dog Bed by Ambient Lounge is well worth the splurge. The high level of comfort it provides whilst being truly unbreakable makes it a top choice for us.

FAQ

Why do dogs chew?

Most owners think that chewing is just a trait of younger dogs, which it is to a certain extent. The full truth, however, is that dogs can chew for a variety of reasons. The top two are:

Teething
Teething is the process of puppies growing into their adult teeth. Like with human babies and children, puppies find this process annoying and painful, so they put all manner of things in their mouths to self soothe. This stage should only last around 6 months.

Liz Donovan of the American Kennel Club writes “Anyone who has ever cared for a teething baby knows this process is painful! You should offer your puppy safe chew toys, like a Kong or Treat Pod toy, at this point in his development. Also, ask your vet to check your puppy’s mouth to make sure everything is moving along as it should.” (3)

Destructive chewing
Destructive chewing manifests as bad behaviours either from puppyhood or as a coping mechanism later in life. It could be boredom, attention seeking or even separation anxiety that causes dogs to destroy furniture and belongings. (4)

How do you stop a dog from chewing?

Getting your puppy or dog to stop destroying their bed, furniture or other household items can be a struggle. You need patience and adequate replacement toys for them to chew. With calm discipline, you can teach your dog to redirect their chewing habit to chew-safe toys. It will take some persistence and vigilance on your part but you will succeed if you remain consistent with your training.

Do dogs grow out of chewing?

Yes and no! As we have discussed, the teething stage ends when your puppy gets to 6 months and has a full set of adult teeth. That said, if you haven’t trained them to direct their chewing efforts to toys, they could take to ripping up other items. Dogs of any age can exhibit these behaviours. Gentle training is the key to curbing this habit.

Choosing the best dog food is never easy, choosing the best puppy food is even harder.

After all, choosing food that doesn't have the right nutritional profile could have serious consequences for the health of a young puppy. That’s why we created our best puppy food Australia list - choose any of these options and you can rest assured you are making the right decision!

Puppy Feeding Guide

First 6 to 8 Weeks

During the first couple of weeks of their lives, puppies get all the nutrients they need from their mother’s milk. In fact, it’s mostly the only thing they do: they eat, they keep warm, and they cuddle with their mom and the other puppies. Of course, this is only true in natural situations when the puppy’s mother is there. Orphaned puppies need to be fed a specially formulated canine milk replacer.

In any case, around 3 or 4 weeks of age puppies can start gradually switching to solid food they are going to be eating during the first months of their life. If feeding dry food, make sure to moisten it, at least in the beginning, to make it more appealing to the puppy.

“For the first few feedings, pups may need encouragement to eat. For example, puppies may be allowed to lick gruel from a finger dipped into the pan. Most puppies will quickly learn to feed from the bowl.” - Fetch by WebMD

Around 6 to 8 weeks of age, puppies should already start getting used to eating solid food. That’s also the earliest time when most veterinarians and breeders recommend separating a puppy from the mother and introducing them to their new home (2).

What to Feed a Puppy at 8 Weeks?

At 8 weeks, puppies should be ready to start eating puppy food. Eight-week-old puppies look super tiny, so you might feel they need extra special food, but in fact, they can eat the same feed they will eat until they grow up: a formula created specifically for puppies.

“Puppies grow very quickly during their first nine months, so be sure to feed him or her a high-quality, veterinarian-recommended food made for puppies.” - Dr Heather Loenser for PetMD

But what exactly is appropriate food for puppies? In Australia, the industry is largely unregulated, and manufacturers don’t have to adhere to any regulation. One indication of well-balanced food is the AAFCO (short for Association of American Feed Control Officials) certification, but again, not every quality food has this in Australia.

However, you can tell a lot about any food by reading the ingredient list. If all of the ingredients are easy for you to identify as wholesome foods, the food should be a good choice. Puppies can eat both wet food and dry kibble.

During the first 3-4 months of thor life, puppies should eat small portions of food 4 times a day. Over time, you’ll need to gradually decrease the number of daily meals (4). The exact timeline will depend on the individual puppy as well as the breed, so it’s best to consult with your vet for clear instructions.

What we exceptionally like about Ziwi food is the fact that it’s air-dried. This differentiates it from most other dry dog food, which is usually cooked at high temperatures. • No artificial flavours, colours or additives

Not all dog food has to cost a pretty penny, and Hill’s Science Diet Puppy proves this statement is true. This is definitely one of the better cheap dog food options that will also give your puppy a well-balanced diet.

Hill’s is a dog food manufacturer based in the USA which makes a couple of different wet and dry formulas geared specifically towards puppies (check the list below). They also add fish oil which is important for eye and brain development in young pups.

Since this is a budget pick, we can’t expect to have all these ingredients on the top of the list, but they’re all included. What’s also important is that Hill’s doesn’t use any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in their dog food. The food features brown rice, which can be helpful with stomach problems.

This food from Hill’s is quite caloric which makes it a great option for developing pups. You have plenty of flavour options, whether you’re looking for dry or wet dog food. There’s also a dry food option without corn, soy or wheat, and we all know those are ingredients our pups really don’t need.

Ivory Coat Puppy Formula, Chicken
  • Small kibbles great for pups of all sizes
  • No grain or artificial preservatives

#5: Best Large Breed Puppy Food: Black Hawk Large Breed Chicken & Rice Puppy Food

Black Hawk Large Breed Chicken & Rice Puppy Food
  • Formulated specifically for large breeds
  • High protein content
  • Enriched with emu oil for skin & coat health

All large breed owners have the same problem - finding high-quality dog food that comes in large bags. No one likes going to the pet store for more food every 2 days, not to mention that large bags always offer better value for money. This food from Black Hawk comes in two sizes - 10kg and 20kg which means a single package will always last quite a while.

But that’s obviously not the only reason why we like this food. Large breeds need special treatment. They grow so fast - one day they’re tiny babies, the next day they can’t fit into your lap. There’s a lot of pressure on their bones and they need the food enriched with all the important ingredients for growth.

This formula is enriched with glucosamine and chondroitin which help with joint health. There’s also added emu oil, which is great for skin and coat, as well as joints. The meat of choice is chicken, which is one of the best protein sources for growing puppies.

This food is highly caloric, so even the largest of pups don’t require more than half a kilo a day. Thanks to the quality ingredients used, it will give your puppy enough energy to power through the day and provide all that he needs to grow into a strong and healthy adult dog.

Holistic Select Grain-Free Dry Puppy Food Small & Mini Breed
  • Small kibble for tiny mouths
  • High protein content
  • Grain-free
  • Lots of plant-based fibre and nutrients
  • Contains live yogurt cultures

This formula from holistic select is one of the who available recipes for puppies that are formulated specifically for small breeds. But what does that actually mean? Well, first of all, the kibble pieces are extra small to ensure the tiny puppies will not have too much trouble chewing on them!

In addition to this, Holistic Select understood that mini-breed puppies can be prone to food sensitivities, so they made a formula that caters to that. This recipe is super rich in prebiotic fibre and even contains live yogurt cultures to keep the stomach of your puppy calm.

Another great thing about this formula is that it’s rich in protein - it contains a minimum of 35%. The main sources of protein are listed as Anchovy and Sardine Meal and Chicken Meal. That’s essentially not bad - the fish meal is not only rich in protein, but also in essential fatty acids that support the healthy development of your pup’s joints as well as skin and coat health. That being said, when the protein is listed as “meal” that means it’s not the most quality source you can get. Meat is certainly better, but this one works too.

  • Comes in 2 sizes
  • Made in Australia with locally sourced ingredients

So far, we have talked about the best food for puppies, but it’s always nice to have a snack to offer from time to time besides the standard kibble formula or canned food.

The Kong Snacks were designed to fit inside the Kong rubber toy to provide your puppy some entertainment while they try to get the biscuit out of the toy. However, they work perfectly fine as a treat in any situation - the toy is really not necessary. These biscuits come in two sizes - small and big so you can choose one that suits your needs best. They can also be easily broken off in pieces if the whole biscuit is too much. After all, you don’t want to go overboard with treats, although it’s often tempting.

Science these are biscuits, it shouldn’t surprise you that they do contain grains. However, it’s not just processed white flour - it’s actually only flour from oats, rye, and sorghum, which are the healthier and more nutritious alternatives. These treats also contain chicken, salmon as well as blueberries and turmeric - which are boat great health boosters.

The only preservatives used in these biscuits are mixed tocopherols. Even though the word “tocopherols” might sound a bit confusing, these are actually just natural forms of vitamin E. They are considered safe for both humans and canines, while also extending the shelf life of the biscuits (x).

Yes, dry kibble is absolutely fine for puppies However, puppies who are just getting used to eating solid food might have a hard time chewing dry kibble. This problem is easy to overcome: just mix the kibble with some warm water and wait a little bit so it softens up before feeding it to your puppy.

Is grain-free food better for puppies?

Contrary to popular belief, grains are not bad for dogs by default. While some dogs can have food sensitivities or be downright allergic to grains, most adult dogs as well as puppies can eat grains and get some useful nutrients from them too. However, good puppy food should not contain too much grains. Puppies need lots of protein, and this they won’t get from grains, but from meat.

When should I stop feeding puppy food to my dog?

In general, puppies should keep eating specialized puppy formulas for as long as their bodies are growing. The growth period of canines usually lasts at least one year, but the exact timeline will depend on the size and breed of your dog. While some small breeds stop growing at around 12 months, larger ones can keep growing until 2 years of age.

For dog owners looking for the some of the best dog foods in Australia, and also want novel kibble recipes or just a way to help with their pup’s itchy skin, this is a great option loved by owners and dogs alike.

Other Canidae Dog Food reviews only focus on their better-known PURE Grain-free line, but we did in-depth research on all their products available in Australia. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the best dog food for your pup:

  • Excellent ingredient list with natural, whole foods, and zero fillers.
  • Their limited-ingredient products only have 7 to 8 ingredients + nourishing vitamins & minerals, perfect for dogs with allergies.
  • Wide flavour variety to fit your dog’s taste & health needs, including exotic protein sources like bison & salmon.

Taste 3.5/5

Most pups love the taste of their Canidae food! Both the PURE Grain-free and whole-grain lines are popular among dogs of all ages. Even their weight-management options (with fewer carbs and fat) are well-received by most dogs. Plus, if you have a super picky eater at home, their wet food options are extra tasty.

Ingredients 3.5/5

While Canidae has both “regular” and specialty dry dog food, most owners recognize them for their PURE Grain-free line.

Keep in mind only the Canidae PURE line has a limited ingredient list. Other options available in Australia & NZ, like the “All Life Stages” line, are NOT grain-free nor have a limited ingredient list, while some PURE products have grains (mainly brown rice). It’s important to be aware of these differences and always read the packaging, especially when buying online.

PRO TIP: Keep in mind some products from the PURE line have grains (albeit whole grains), so always read the labels before buying.

However, all Canidae products use wholesome, easily recognizable ingredients with animal protein and a healthy carb source. If your dog has food allergies or sensitivities, the limited ingredients of the Canidae PURE Dog Food line are a good option, especially in the case of pups that can’t eat common ingredients like poultry or peas.

Overall, we really like the composition of the PURE line, but we’re taking off 1 star because labelling can be confusing (some PURE products are grain-free, others aren’t) and some products from the All Life Stages line use sunflower or soybean oil.

Protein content 4/5

Canidae Dog Food’s #1 ingredient in all their products is animal protein. We really liked that in the PURE line most products have animal protein as the first two ingredients, usually from two different sources (i.e. Bison flavour has bison and lamb). Some items even have 3 different animal protein sources.

Their PURE grain-free products have between 30% and 32% of protein, which is well above the AAFCO-recommended amount of 18% minimum [1].

PRO TIP: Make sure any dog food you buy has at least 18% crude protein.

That means that your pup will have enough protein to build muscle and thrive without any supplementation. Keep in mind that most Canidae Grain Free reviews forget to mention that part of the protein sources in the line are presumably plant-based (like peas and chickpeas).

Additives 4/5

Since experts at RSPCA Australia advise against pet-grade food with sulphites (linked to dangerous B1 deficiencies [2]), it’s really important to keep an eye out for the additives in your dog’s food.

“Choose human-grade meat as some pet meat and bone products will contain preservatives that can be bad for your dog’s health – RSPCA Australia” [3]

Canidae prides itself on only adding human-grade ingredients and no fillers to their food, so you can be sure your pup won’t ingest harmful additives. Canidae uses tocopherols (a form of Vitamin E), lecithin and rosemary extract as healthier preservatives that won’t threaten your dog’s health.

On top of the usual minerals and vitamins your pup needs to thrive, Canidae also includes live probiotics on their dry kibble: probiotics help your dog digest their food, feed their gut microbiome and avoids excess bloating.

Because of all the healthy additives and zero sulphites, we’re giving Canidae 5 out of 5 in this category.

Variety 4/5

Pups and their owners have many options to choose from! On top of their better-known PURE line (with both grain-free and whole-grain options), you also have the “All life stages” line and several other products to fit your dog’s needs.

Their PURE limited-ingredient line offers great variety for dogs with allergies or food sensitivities, and you can usually find at least 4 or 5 different flavours from that line to choose from when you get it in-store.

Canidae also carries dry and wet dog food options, as well as treats (both grain-free and regular) that you can use during training or just daily life. They have puppy and adult options, as well as products targeted at senior dogs (with extra add-ins for joint support) and others for weight management. This is especially important since obesity can be very dangerous to your dog. As researchers from a UK University found:

PRO TIP: “Obesity in dogs is linked to decreased longevity and diseases such as osteoarthritis, as well as emotional disturbance and vitality” [4]

If you have a multi-dog household, many owners recommend the Canidae All life stages line that feeds dogs of all sizes, ages and needs. Keep in mind the latter doesn’t have grain-free options.

We’re taking a star off because while they do offer size-specific food in Australia, it’s difficult to find in-store and not all online retailers carry it. Plus, their small-breed options are much more limited flavour-wise. This is especially important for those with toy and small dogs and seniors that can have a harder time eating large kibble.

Price 4/5

While this isn’t the cheapest dog food available, it is pretty affordable considering the wholesome ingredients. On top of it, most retailers offer free shipping on orders over a certain threshold, and dog food in general is above that value especially if you buy for large dogs (so 10 kgs or more at a time).

We’re big proponents of investing in high-quality foods to save in vet bills down the road, so paying a bit more upfront is worth it.

Canidae Puppy Food Review

Jack Russell puppy eating.

This article wouldn't be complete without a puppy food review.

Unfortunately, while Canidae has different puppy options, Canidae Dog Food Australia only carries one.

That means puppy owners only have access to their Puppy Grain-free chicken & sweet potato flavour or will have to feed them the All Life Stages food. While less-than-ideal, it isn’t too bad since you do have access to both grain-free (the PURE Puppy option) or whole-grain options (All Life Stages).

However, we don’t like that there are no different options based on your dog’s size. As such, small and toy puppies will have to eat the same kibble as larger dogs. The lack of large-breed options is a concern with large and giant breeds since overfeeding or feeding a diet that’s too calorie-dense can cause brittle bones and decalcification.

Of course, you can always portion control your pup’s intake, but this can be tiresome and you need a vet’s advice. This isn’t as much of an issue with puppy food targeted at large and giant breeds. If that’s your case, we recommend a puppy food adapted to your particular dog’s size.

Do Not Buy If

While this is a great option for many pups, you shouldn’t buy this brand if:

  • You’d rather buy local: Canidae Dog Food is made in the US and shipped all the way to Australia. If you’re concerned with your carbon footprint and buying local, this isn’t the brand for you!
  • You have a giant breed puppy: As we have already mentioned, giant puppies need careful portion control to keep them from growing too fast and giving their bones a chance to really strengthen and absorb calcium. Puppy food targeted at your dog’s adult size is less calorie-dense and will make it easier to keep them properly fed while taking care of their specific needs. Since Canidae Puppy Food is only available for “all-breeds”, you might have an easier time if you choose other brands.

The Verdict

We really like this brand, especially if your pup needs a limited-ingredient diet. In general, both dogs and owners love Canidae and their grain-free options are reasonably priced, taste great, and have no unhealthy fillers or preservatives. We say, give it a chance!

Why Splurge On A Luxury Dog Bed

Even though they can be very active during the day, all dogs love their sleeping time. In fact, they spend as much as half of their days sleeping. And, if they are not sleeping and there is really nothing to do, dogs still love spending time in their beds.

“In addition to the 50% of their day spent sleeping, dogs will then spend another 30% of their awake hours doing what I call “loafing”. Loafing is when a dog is awake but really not doing much of anything—just hanging out. Typically, loafing time is spent lying down, watching the world go by, and generally enjoying being lazy.” - Sandra C. Mitchell, DVM for PetMD

Considering all of this, it really does make sense to spend a little extra money and/or effort to find your pooch a perfect place to sleep. Deluxe dog beds not only look nice in your home, but can also make your dog’s life much more enjoyable.

How To Shop For Luxury Dog Beds

Design

The best thing about quality designer beds is that they give you the option to find something that will look good inside your home and be good for your pet. If you’re willing to spend a bit more on a proper bed, you really don’t have to compromise on any of those.

In terms of design, you can find beds in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. They will have different textures as well as different stylish patterns on the outside. So don’t settle for the first OK bed you see - it’s worth it to look for a bed that you like visually and your dog will like in terms of comfort.

Comfort

What kind of dog bed is most comfortable? Unfortunately, there is no universal answer to this question. Memory foam mattresses or orthopedic dog beds can be great, especially for large and older dogs. However, this is not what all dogs like. Some of them love beds that are as soft as possible and allow them to shuffle the filling around until they find the perfect position. Some dogs prefer raised beds and some even like sleeping on a flat mat more than anything else. Finding out the perfect bed for your dog will take some trial and error, but you will both be happy once you find the sweet spot.

Washability

Fancy dog beds are nice to have and usually look super cute, but they get dirty just like any other bed. This is simply a fact of life. For this reason, choosing a bed that is washable in the washing machine will save you a lot of trouble and time. Some beds have covers that are removable and washable, and sometimes you can put the whole bed into the machine. In any case, make sure to think about how you will clean your new bed before purchasing.

Snooza Buddy Bed Eskimo
  • Luxurious design
  • Easy to clean
  • Eco-friendly
  • Comes in a variety of sizes

The Buddy Bed from Snooza is one of the overall best designed dog beds we have encountered. To begin with, we love the simple but smart design of this bed. The bed is oval-shaped, and it features a firm base with raised walls on all sides.

The walls are firm, but lined with soft fleece, so they provide ultimate comfort to your dog. In addition to this, the oval shape allows the bed to gently follow the shape of a dog’s spine, making it easier for your pooch to settle in a comfortable position. If your pet likes spinning in circles before lying down, they will definitely enjoy settling into this bed from Snooza.

Inside the external walls, there is, of course, the most important part: the cushion on which the dog will sleep. The cushion on this bed is made from “Snoozafill” - a mixture of fibers derived from recycled PET bottles and Australian-made memory foam.

This modern dog bed comes in a couple of different styles, but we especially love the Eskimo for the extra luxury it offers. Namely, besides the extra warm polar fleece finish, the Eskimo version also features a wide faux fur cuff. The cuff is super warm and fluffy, and will definitely provide comfort even in the coldest nights, making it a great heated dog bed option. Both the cover and the cushion are machine washable.

Rosewood 40 Winks Snuggle Oval Plush Dog Bed
  • Great for pets who love to snuggle
  • Warm
  • Water-resistant and chew-proof
  • Easy to clean

Looking for an affordable dog bed that won't break the bank? This bed from Rosewood proves that you don’t have to spend a fortune to provide some luxury for your pooch. Even though it’s quite affordable, this bed is also incredibly snuggly. It’s a perfect choice for dogs who like cave-like beds.

The bed has an oval shape that keeps your dog warm and all snuggled up while asleep. The exterior of the bed is made of an extremely fluffy material, featured both on the inside and on the outside.

The plush material they used is luxurious and stylish, but also practical - it’s water-resistant and the manufacturer also claims it’s chew-proof making it a top indestructible dog bed option. We wouldn’t guarantee your teething dog won’t manage to get his teeth through the side of the bed, but it’s supposed to be quite sturdy.

The base of the bed has anti-slip fabric so you don’t have to worry about the bed gliding across the room when your pooch wiggles around in it. If your Fido gets the bed dirty, don’t worry, it’s easily cleaned - simply put the whole bed in the washing machine on a 30-degree cycle and that’s it. After the washing is done, let it air dry. Do not tumble dry, as it may deform the shape of the bed.

The only thing we can complain about this bed is that it only comes in one size. With a 15-inch diameter, it only suits smaller dogs, leaving their bigger buddies jealous they can’t fit.

Pickle & Polly Medium Dog Bed Teepee/Tent
  • Stylish and unique design
  • Both canopy and pillowcase are washing machine-safe
  • The bed folds up for less storage space

If you’re looking for a unique bed for your pooch, this teepee from Pickle & Polly might be what you’re looking for. Its stylish design almost acts like a cave dog bed and is surely something that will catch the eye of all of your friends - and your dog’s too.

The teepee comes in two colours - white and blue, both of which blend well with different home décors. This bed is great for dogs with anxiety, since it has a cave-style design that provides a sense of comfort and safety.

Besides looking good, this bed is a high-quality product. The canopy is made out of 300g density woven material which is chemical-free and, in case of any dirt accidents, it’s safe for cleaning in the washing machine. The frame poles are 100% pine and easy to assemble and put away. The whole setup is rather lightweight and easy to transfer, so your dog can sleep in his favourite bed even when on trips.

The pillow is 4 inches thick and filled with high-grade material which retains the shape even after years of being slept on. Furthermore, the pillow has a cover with a swirled flower finish which is soft and cozy, which will make your Fido love napping even more. Since the pillow is light-colored, it’s inevitable to get dirty if your dog jumps straight onto it with his paws muddy from an outside play. But don’t worry, you can put the cover into the washing machine on a delicate cycle and it will come out like new.

#5: Chew-Resistant and Plush Dog Bed: Ambient Lounge Luxury Dog Bed

Ambient Lounge Luxury Dog Bed
  • Removable soft cover is machine-washable
  • Suitable for outdoor and indoor use
  • 99% chew-proof material
  • Variety of sizes

This bed from Ambient Lounge is quite a lounger. The manufacturer claims dogs sleep in a circle so that’s why they need a round-shaped bed. While our four-legged buddies sleep in all kinds of positions, some rather awkward and quite uncomfortable-looking, we get the idea behind the bed shape and we like it.

The bed has a faux fur cover which is soft like a cloud. It’s removable so you can unzip and take it off when it’s time for washing, or during the summertime - you don’t want your pooch to be too hot! The base is made out of interwoven waterproof soft nylon, which makes this bed suitable for sleeping indoor as well as outdoor. It’s easily cleaned, a little bit of soap and lukewarm water will remove even the toughest of stains. There’s also a handle that allows you to easily drag the bed from the house to the patio and vice versa.

Don’t worry if your Fido likes to chew everything - the manufacturer claims this bed is super chew-resistant. Even the most tenacious dogs give up on trying to penetrate the fabric.

This bed comes in 4 sizes, ranging from small to XXL. Generally, dogs prefer bigger beds - they adore sleeping in our beds, don’t they? The biggest bed size is large enough for a Great Dane or St. Bernard’s dog to comfortably lay on.
